Battle beneath the Earth (1967)

Postby doctor_virgin on Sat Sep 25, 2004 8:16 pm

Weird but rather funny s.f. -movie about China invading the USA through enormous tunnels.

Ripped from DVB-C (Digital Video Broadcast - Cable) source is TCM (Turner Classic Movies - network), no

logo.

---SYNOPSIS---

US Navy commander Jonathan Shaw does his secretary a favour and goes to visit her brother, Dr Arnold Kramer, who has been incarcerated in an asylum, obsessed with `ants' and underground tunnels. But a series of disasters make Shaw think that Kramer may not be crazy after all. Soon he and his troops uncover evidence of a vast network of tunnels burrowed underneath the USA by Communist Chinese saboteurs.

---TIDBITS---

This is probably a film that was made ten years too late. It belongs in the heyday of McCarthyism along with other Communist hysteria films like Red Planet Mars (1952), Invasion USA (1952) and Rocket Attack USA (1958), not in the 1960s after the arrival of entente and the great East-West thawing. Peculiarly it is also a Communist hysteria film made in the UK, a country which had relatively low Communist paranoia anxieties as opposed to the USA. It is also nice to see the Chinese Communists getting some equal time as subjects of hysteria rather than the customarily featured Russian Communists (although the actors playing the Chinese are all Caucasian actors unconvincingly made up as Asians). There is certainly a rather alarming xenophobia to the film - the American soldiers without even thinking open fire the moment they see Chinese soldiers in the tunnels.

Director Tully adopts the documentary-like stolidity of most 1950s action films and it all comes with a heavy-handed didacticism. There is a crude, pedestrian vigour to the film - the same sort of crude excitement most 1950s war films operated on. But many scenes often come across as rather silly - one where Arne is brainwashed by a Chinese woman using a handheld fan, or the conceptually daft scene where the military organize the entire US to make no sound for thirty minutes so they can detect the noise of the underground operations. It is also often unwound by poor special effects - the laser is simply a spotlight beam and the explosions are double-exposed fireballs.

Nothing special actually. :D

Just capturing from my digital cable set-top through my NVIDIA GF4 video-card with Virtualdub using the Huffyuv-codec. GKnot for videoprocessing and headac3he for audio.

Is that actually DVB then? I thought to be a DVB required a digital tuner card? I was going to buy one you see since it is the level up from my DV bridge, but if its just an analogue capture card, then I can already do DVB

No, I thought you wanted to know how I capture beside using the DVB-card on my PC. Thought that was already quite obvious...

I don't think there's much difference in quality though between capturing analogue (scart->svhs) from the DVB-set-top and grabbing the stream through my DVB-card. Only a hugh difference in filesize. (4-6 GB v.s. 40-60 GB).
My "children of the damned" -rip for example was done analogue->digital because my card was broken at that moment and I personally liked that rip more than a "real digital rip" I did later. A good Fileheaven movie-moderator would spot the difference immediately ofcourse...

Hey, it's still a rip from a dvb-source.

spudthedestroyer wrote:Well my captures are okay I thought, but everyone seems to be able to do all these new fangled ultra-l33t rips :(

Well, there's a big (and I mean really big) difference in quality between capturing from analogue tv-source or from dvb-source, even I can see that. I don't know what source you're capturing from. (Your mum still on the roof pointing the antenna towards the civilised world while you're trying to capture? )

b.t.w. "fangled ultra-l33t rips", is that what the "F" in FHQS stands for?

This is worthy to be in the High Quality Section me thinks ... the quality is brilliant for a DVBRip ... there's worse in there

cheers,

Read the rules for the sections, anything less than DVD is disallowed because as soon as a DVD comes out, if indeed one does, its surpassed.

Also DVDrips that are nuked or the source isn't very good go in lower quality.
