90% of all Sci-Fi is complete rubbish

Postby TurnIP on Fri Apr 23, 2004 3:19 pm

"Ninety percent of all Science Fiction is rubbish."

When confronted with this statement, famous Sci-Fi novellist N.N. replied:
"Yes. But then again, ninety percent of everything is rubbish."

Question: who was this writer?

Fun page indeed, but there's still a lot missing imo.

And some of the information is not correct I think:
robotic (n.)
antedating 1941

robotical (adj.)
antedating 1942

robotically (adv.)
antedating 1971
Douglas Winston submitted a cite from a reprint of Poul Anderson's "The Byworlder"Mike Christie verified this in the 1971 original magazine publication.

roboticist (n.)
antedating 1946
Mike Christie submitted a 1946 cite from Isaac Asimov's "Evidence". Earliest cite in the OED: 1947.

roboticized (adj.)
antedating 1952
Fred Galvin submitted a 1952 cite from Edward Wellen's "Origins of Galactic Slang" Earliest cite in the OED: 1957

robotics (n.)
antedating 1941 (Isaac Asimov)

Afaik, the word "Robot" (which is not in the list - only derivations) was first used by Czech writer Karel Capek (1890-1938). It was made popular by Asimov.
