Butterfly Effect, The (2004) *Dir. Cut*

Postby Polityk on Fri Apr 23, 2004 1:41 am

I'm not sure if this is the right movie for this board, but I'd rather post it here than in HHAH non-horror section - after all, it has time travelling, only that it's actually more "fi" than "sci". Anyway, I really liked it, nice storyline, a few cool twists, interesting idea. Of course you can argue about some paradoxes, as usual with such films, but in general the plot is constructed in a witty way IMO. Some hate it, some love it, judge for yourself. I just treat it as a very good no-brainer, perhaps even a little bit more than that.

Final Destination 2 screenwriters Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber make their directorial debut with the sci-fi thriller The Butterfly Effect. Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher with facial hair) wants to free himself from his disturbing childhood memories. As a kid, he often blacked out for long periods of time and tried to detail his life in a journal. As a young adult, he revisits the journal entries to figure out the truth about his troubled childhood friends Kayleigh (Amy Smart), Lenny (Elden Henson), and Tommy (William Lee Scott). When he discovers he can travel back in time in order to set things right, he tries to save his beloved friends. However, he finds out that relatively minor changes can make major problems for the future. The Butterfly Effect also stars Eric Stoltz, Ethan Suplee, and Melora Walters. The title was inspired by the story A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury. — Andrea LeVasseur

Quality is very high, didn't notice any sound problems either, so I think it can stay here until the proper version appears.

@gamer - was hoping this was a proper :(

@polityk - is only more noticable at the start of the film, high pitched noises are all 'echoey' for want of a better description but becomes less noticable as the film goes on (prob jus get used 2 it) hasnt stopped me watching again tho. just await a proper rip :)

Ok, I watched this in the middle of the night so I didn't notice the "echo". The I rewatched it and yes, it is noticeable, but not as annoying as to spoil the fun, so if you aren't looking for a copy to keep in your archive, you can safely go for this one. If you have limited BW and are sure you will want to keep it, my advice is to wait for a proper.

just watched this and also thought it was a good movie :D echo wasn't too bad at all, only in a few areas did it really stand out but it certainly didn't ruin the movie for me so don't let it deter you from getting it if you want it :wink:

worked well on my standalone divx player aswell :mrgreen:

Great, just great. However, am I the only one who thinks of this film as a dark variation of 'Frequency'?

You don't know Frequency? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0186151/
Nice family film. Link? Just wait. When I find it, I put it back in share...tomorrow.

On the other hand...it is an old sharereactor release, so there should still be enough sources.

Frequency is very good... I think.. I should track a link down for it in fact... but yea this is a very sim movie, though I think Butterfly Effect is a tad smarter, though imo Frequency is a better story.

Just got this rip and the sound isn't that bad at all. I ripped out the mp3 and loaded it in sound forge and ran the clean up utils, de-scratch, normalise peak and sync enviroment. The sound is now preety much perfect all the echo is removed, you losoe a tiny bit of high and low end sounds though....

My 2 cents: (if anyone cares?)

'Memento' meets 'Donie Darko' and the result is an almost amazing film. Sadly someone felt they had to make it into an entertaining thriller, instead of a deep and thought provoking epos. Where a philosophical presentation about the pressence of a 'soul' and the questions surrounding our essential individual personality (as found in Blade Runner) could have haunted the viewer, is instead a standard 3-act tale of a guy trying to set things right, that we've seen many times before. It does what it does with great success, and it really IS an entertaining movie every second, but it could have been so much more had it dared go beyond the more light weight, easy-on-the-viewer aproach.

That's basically what I thought right after seeing this one.
Afterall I think Frequency is a better movie, but I like the non-Hollywood end of this one more! :wacky:
