Harry Potter and something with stuff and deadly words in the title
Still no where near as good as the third, as it doesn't really push the series in any direction and is mostly a pedestrian effort. Not sure why they decided to carry on with this director. That said, there's some really nice camera work, it didn't seem overly long but could have lost 15mins of cinematography of trees, shrubs, and rocks as it added nothing but run time.

There's some nice sense of dread and hopelessness established the opening scenes of the film which I thought were very much on target; although the erasing the memory of her parents scene then not making a second mention of it or even looking in the slightest unhappy about the fact throughout the rest of the film was a bit of a waste. Similarly, snape as the most interesting character barely makes an appearance.

No hogwarts, that was always a nice backdrop so the films lost a bit of magic (sorry, no better word), but it still fealt more or less like the Potter films.

Ending was a non-ending; I'm not sure they needed two films for this but I'm saying that without seeing the second part which might be chocker-block with snizzle. I do think I'll be saying the same thing same time next year however.

7ish maybe. Was very okay, better than the last two films that's for sure!

This as another enthusiastic review by Spud.

PRINCESS BRIDE bluray. it's amazing what you can do simply with a hidef transfer. iirc, the hd dvd of UNFORGIVEN is still pretty dark (and the dvd is terribly so), but PB's colors are noticeably more vibrant/deep. KUNG FU PANDA is next in the bd player whenever the mood strikes. it'll be interesting to see how the cgi fares on the projector (SHREK didn't go so good on an HDTV rip, but I think that may have been due to upscaling and compression). I also got ROBOCOP on bd for cheap. will be interesting to see how that transfer went.

the bluray of national lampoons christmas vacation is pretty bad, really dark, pretty much no enhancements have been done, it's pretty much just a straight copy of the dvd but to fit HD resoutions, bit of a let down, but then it only cost £6 so i guess you get what you pay for, and the film is still an enjoyable one

the bd of KUNG FU PANDA was great. I'm pretty confident now that when I watched SHREK on HDTV, it was just matted or "upscaled."

Blurays are overpriced though, especially considering 98% of them are just upscaled DVDs with no added extras or new transfers or anything

Plus its an ultra-ultra shit proprietary format that provides very little benefits over the last generation, and has a constantly changing spec that's still fucked up...
Still watching Chuck, pretty entertaining although not much of a heavy weight storyline. Some geek references of merit, top marks for working Dune into it.

This week's Peep Show was brilliant, Smallville still has the lowest level of catharsism in the history of motion picture, haven't had chance to watch supernatural but that's gotten a lot better with its overhaul of mythos (super monsters, hooray!)

catharsism?

I haven't seen a BD that is the same transfer as a DVD yet. But of those discs in my library, I suspect BLAZING SADDLES and ROBOCOP (paid less than $10ea). For HD DVD, I seriously wonder about UNFORGIVEN.

season finale of DEXTER was meh. I think they glossed over a lot of very interesting material in order to reset the series: dexter's back to being a loner; quinn is apparently off the hook because all those phone calls meant nothing; lumen is "cured"; and deb catches dexter (literally) red handed but...of course there's a conceit and she doesn't really find out shit about him. shit just magically reset to the initial formula. even the children are back with him "for the summer." and then dexter, who was devastated in the penultimate scene, is waxing philosophical about how great life is in the last scene. what? you can't end on a downer? it wasn't terrible, but it felt cheap at the same time.
