just quit on LH. giving GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995) a go. I coulda sworn I saw this a while ago, but I don't remember fuckall of what I'm seeing in the first 10 mins. maybe it was SAC? iunno. eyes too tired to concentrate on subs for the rest of the night though. will come back to it.

I actually know how ecchi is used. you're old skool, mate:
The term ecchi is applied to anime or manga that has vague sexual content (such as skimpy clothing, partial or full nudity), but does not show sexual intercourse, making it the manga equivalent of a PG-13 rated movie.
it was "harem" that I was guessing/assuming. agreed on the overuse of special terms. but it is a specific kind of comedy: school life, sex comedy, battle of sexes, etc. MY HIME was much better than LH, but that series also had sci-fi action in it, so it's not really a fair comparison. both had that school life thing going. I'm guessing this is what SCHOOL RUMBLE and that HOST CLUB series are like. NEGIMA was a hot seller. I hope that's more like MY HIME. :?

I've also seen or already had queued most of the 2008 awards (didn't look at other threads yet). my motivation is a little split though:

1) entertainment (of course), but...
2) decide what will sell best and what I can recommend to customers

so my selection has a lot to do with what dvds are being pressed by bandai, funimation, and anime works, and what the artwork looks like on the box sets. LH had spectacular box art!

best anime i have seen in ages was Planetes (2003-2004) [ANIME] @ scidonkey I knwo it is not everyone cup of tea but i foudn it to be compelling and interesting. It really explored scifi concepts on how space travel and stuff affects the human condition... with is kinda close to my fav type of science fiction.

some of those recommendations are pretty rank imo.... Onegai Teacher?!!! < vomits all over the keyboard>

If you would like to see a kind of 'out of left field" anime... try Princess Tutu. It is very weird and surprisingly entertaining i though... spesh as i am not really into the style of it... but it is just so wacky weird that it kinda makes up for it.

Another really cool one is FLCA i think it is called.... or FLC.. or something like that.. very cool (EDIT: FLCL)

Also i had to get help from that anime forum to remember this title but try Genshiken. It is very cool... about a girl that needs to be part of a club at uni for extra credit but everything is full up so has to join a anime club.. They take her to anime conventions, watch this fiction anime show all the time... it is basically a comedy about us... anime fans... very cool and quite fun imo.

eww. you just unsold me on that. :outsider:

decided to go old(er) school: SCRAPPED PRINCESS. very much enjoying it. it's clear to me now that I prefer (medievalish) fantasy: KINGDOMS, BERSERK, MORIBITO, FMA, CLAYMORE, STRANGER...now SCRAPPED PRINCESS. even TSUBASA, which I'm fairly certain I wouldn't have liked in space, was decent enough in the fantasy-ish setting. and I can take a light sprinkling of other stuff just to change the pace or if it's proven transcendent. but future sci-fi is full of slag. there are plenty of good series, sure. and very interesting ones in the queue. but so much of the popular stuff is terribly done or absolutely botches an interesting premise. so far, it's only the "action sci-fi" that hasn't disappointed (LAGOON, DARKER THAN BLACK, WITCHBLADE), but they're all kinda disappointments from the beginning because they're pretty shallow to begin with.

speaking of future sci-fi: finished GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995). decent. I'm sensing a trend that really gets exacerbated in the world of anime: the movies are shallow. not intellectually. I mean, you can follow the train of thought and appreciate it, but the series just kick the living shit out them in depth. I know: it should be obvious that 25 (mins) x 26 or 50 (eps) is a LOT more time for characterization and intrigue than one 90 minute movie. but that's just not the case in most american shows. production values aside, movies are generally deeper and more engrossing than tv shows. granted, movies these days run about 120 minutes, but that's still a far cry from the combined run time of a tv series, which is almost always more bland, generic, common denominator plots and dialogue.

Genshiken is great, I even bought the DVDs :o  Too bad the sequel was meh. FLCL is also very good, my avatar is FLCL's main character.

Princess Tutu is a weird one. I enjoyed it, but I watched it with the missus, so I'm not gay!

All this anime talk has made me dig out some of my old jap dvd. I just finished Sword of Doom.... OMG i love that film.. it is just pure class from beginning to end. People say Sergio Leone is the master of the tension building stare.. but this movie shows that that style was alive and kiing in japan... and considering his remake of Yojimbo.. it is not a leap to think he was influenced by films like this and the other samurai showdown sequences in other jap movies.

seriously watch this film if you haven't seen it yet. Its a master peace.
