I liked the new star trek, although you are right this was about kicking the shit out of all predefined star trek concepts. Shaking them and readjusting them to fit a Battlestar Gallactica style action heavy, unclean model.

I've got to wonder what it has done to Star Trek fans though, this may have picked up a few fence players, but I imagine they are going to confused the hell out passives depending on what they do next. If they develop the alternative storyline in series form then people are just going to wonder what the hell is going on.

Easily the best Trek film though, the best 'clean' Trek was First Contact.

I think that was a brilliant marketing decision on the part of the producers/writer(s). if the movie fails, you can just pretend it never happened and go back to your TNG stories. If it succeeds, then you have literally a whole new world to work with (ala Batman Begins) and a slew of young (read cheap) leads for future sequels AND you're no longer tied to past mythologies. very savvy imo.

... BS isn't action scifi... like it has a few action sequences but it is a heavy drama. Dinks comments about Swars is closer to home.

Well i am a pretty hardcore star trek fan... as in i own all the DvDs of every ep of each show + the film + have them all as digital files and often play them as a continual backgroudn nose while i play games and stuff... I know them pretty much backwards.... yes i am a nerd,.. so what wana fight about it?

Anyway.. i love the new trek.

Totally.. it is a really brilliant move by the writters.. I believe they will continue directly form THIS movies as in vulcan is decimated etc etc.. so form now on it is an alternative universe I am pretty sure they worked out this idea after teh failing of enterprise.. that TV shows main problem was its confinement to the historical cannon of the franchise.... the experience with enterprise directly affected teh development of this new scrip.

well...yeah. the whole point of ENTERPRISE was that they didn't want to do *another* NEXT GEN series, right? iirc, the only other serious option they were bouncing around was a star fleet academy thing ala the computer games? or maybe I'm just projecting, cuz I was sick to death of NEXT GEN series. I actually liked what I saw of ENTERPRISE though. It was closer to BSG in terms of technology (more "realistic" I guess). So the technology and ship itself looked more like the interior of a battleship than a luxury cruise liner. the uniforms looked much better too.

to be fair though, once they wiped out the entire borg race in the finale of voyager they didn't really have anywhere else to go but backwards, hence enterprise

... BS isn't action scifi...

Completely agree with you about it being BS that BSG isn't heavy on action scifi. :wacky: It was pretty much a hanger deck drama, where the drama comes from being continually assualted, killed and kasploded in their little spaceships every week. That would be the action and the scifi facilitating a bit of drama. Until it went a little bit shit after 3 seasons or so, and spent some episodes prancing around pretentious, religious undertones, before dying horrible in the prolonged and torturous dying president scenes (couldn't that skank die already?). BSG is pretty much a mix of action, scifi and drama, and got increasingly convoluted and completely lost itself when it delved into the realms of hogwash the more it strayed from its epic action scifi story-arc. BSG was at its best in the middle of the action and the scifi (establishing series), it couldn't have been drama without the action, and it couldn't have hit the heights with the action without the drama.

For me new Star Trek and new BSG aimed to piss in the same pot, they probably didn't explore characterisation as much in the star trek film due to time constraints (they pretty much had to introduce famous chacters, quite a number of them, and spent the film doing this), but they felt very similar for me as a viewer.

Good thing they did since BSG is better than old star trek (and old star trek is better than old BSG )

And Enterprise was not the "reboot" of this new film, Enterprise was utterly shit, probably the worse series and this is coming from a guy that does not like Star Trek. Enterprise was the same shit in a different uniform. Would be nice to see a new star trek which modelled itself after B5 or BSG a bit :) They might have attempted things with that series but it was just another shitty star trek series.

moving back and forth between the two BSGs makes that incredibly difficult to follow, but I don't think anyone would argue that the original BSG was a (fairly straightforward) action sci-fi. The new/recent BSG was much more cerebral (ala ST - created by DS9 folks, btw). The new ST is much more action and less cerebral than any prior series/movie (ala old BSG).

I agree with the second paragraph. they both reboot the old series by (sometimes drastically) re-imagining or reconfiguring the source mythologies. and both do so (largely) for the better imo.

BSG reboot had layers of context but I wouldn't go too celebral on it :D

Are you talking Troy the movie level celebral again dinky (ie. great on paper, not particularly the implementation) ? I know... I know... you just like the outfits :wacky:

I think that last bit went over my head.

new BSG was about as multi-layered as a sci-fi can get. it was contemporary, hard-hitting, and didn't take sides (i.e., preach) on the issues it dealt with; it explored them thoroughly. you just don't see that very often. for instance, the "good guys" (humans) are the polytheists who are being hunted down by the monotheistic facists, but the polytheistic humans are the ones most mired down in dogmatic/reactionary ritual. they both prove to be brutal victors and even more brutal "survivors" (witness RAZOR). new caprica was the most eye-opening analysis of the US occupation of Iraq to date (fiction or non-fiction). intellectual, cerebral...iunno what you'd call it in opposition to "action," but it was an extremely effective combination of the two aspects - the best I've ever seen. on the level of the romero's Living Dead (original).

I guess you could debate about whether that makes it the *best*. I mean, I like SW miles more than NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (race), ALIEN (gender/pregnancy) or BLADE RUNNER (sentience/soul), but I have no pretensions about which one "has more to say."

been watching more eps of SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED. really digging the show. it's not as whiny as the canonical spidey cartoon from the 90s (which was actually quite good). the guy who voices peter parker is particularly better. it's just more suited to spidey, more tongue-in-cheek.

I think the finale of DOLLHOUSE was last friday. it was decent. the series as a whole was decent. it won't be missed though. :drunk:

narr that is how they sold it to the networks.. but it didn't take them long to almost totally remove the space battles form the show apart form the odd one now and then and even then most of the episode was drama stuff. I am not sure if that was intentional or if they just ran out of money.. but either way it enabled them to get to the core of the show witch is human drama

Dollhouse was the most retarded concept.... Joss just take a hint.. make Buffy the new Generation or something.. i mean wasn't one meant to be born into each generation.. perfect setup for a revival tv show.

the irony of that statement and the content you watch on a regular basis made me literally laugh a mouthful of water all over my desk. do me a favor and don't post funny shit while I'm drinking.

FIREFOX and DOLLHOUSE really were left field shows that had almost no chance on premise alone. :?

There's such something about Joss Whedon i really don't like, there's no real basis for this other then Buffy was ok when it started then went shit around season 3, and i hate angel, and as such i hate him :P

Also, yes i do watch some really low calibre shows :D
