 @ muppets

hated the BSG finale, however.

started watching NEON GENESIS EVANGELION. it's not bad, but there are gaping - plot holes is the wrong word - stupidities in the fictional world that make it difficult to take seriously. most of my issues revolve around the barely-there plot device that produces "mechs" (apparently living to some degree?) that only certain children can pilot. there are other smaller issues having to do with human relationships that are cheesy too, but they're minor and not unexpected for the genre. I've only seen 5 or 6 eps so far. I expect some explanation to what actually "makes" an EVA (what's with the living thing under the armor? etc.) and something explaining why the hell only children can pilot them. gotta tell ya, that's the stupidest thing that demands suspension of disbelief. the transforming city is actually a cool sci-fi idea. anyway, it's only 25 eps + 2 movies, so it's not a lot of effort to view "the whole story."
:spy:

ps - I think a new SMALLVILLE is waiting on my dvr somewhere.

F*CKING GIGABYTE

The retards state full compatability with both my ram and my cpu, but wait for this... only after flashing the bios to a new version. How the f*ck is a new customer building a pc supposed to get an old processor to flash it?

I'm not messing about though, RMA'd and requested a full refund.

South Park was ace, what is it about a kazoo that just makes comedy gold?

I watched Ong-Bak and well, i don't know what to think.

The fight scenes are excellent, but its a weird mix of comedy, violence, etc. and frankly I think asian films have a lot of trouble deciding on what they are trying to do. There's a lot of scenes that are just completely out of place and it degrades the whole effect of their movies.

For example, it jumps from comic scenes, to drug overdoses, to executions, to a car chase. It just doesn't seem to keep itself focused, and the juggling of scenes is more random than a juxtaposition to emphasise a mood shit.

That said I enjoyed it and will watch number 2 tonight :)

from FH...
watched NEON GENESIS EVANGELION. umm...lots of common anime "nonesense" (like 14 year olds piloting cutting edge mechs - yes, I know there's a reason each individual is able to control their particular mech; it's still a stereo-typical anime pill). despite stupid stuff like that, the series does get interesting. quality animation (1995, remember) and a really nice intro imo. I absolutely love the sound fx. but the whole series just gets refuctarded in the last few eps. I did some googling, and I guess I'm not the only one who felt they really borked the thing. however, one of my personal faves, CLAYMORE, does almost the exact same thing (in terms of borking the ending with "all out idiocy"). the fact that it's only 20-some eps makes it worth watching no matter how you feel about the genre as it's a polarizing series and a "landmark" and all that shite. one thing I liked about this more than most series is that it more or less finishes the threads it starts with its major characters. there are exceptions, and their's plenty of room for more without overstuffing the information pipeline, but in comparison to other series I've watched recently, NGE doesn't just introduce fairly important players who do important shit in the series without fleshing out their motivations, desires, etc.

Now imma watch tonight's ep of LIFE.

Fight scenes in ong-bak 2 are WAY better than the first. Story is a bit of a mess, but overall at least it knows what its trying to do.

grabbed the dvdrips of Odyssey 5, enjoying it, though i'm pissed off to know it got cancelled with a cliffhanger ending, so many decent scifi shows end that way because tv hates science fiction shows

I thought it was way better than S7 and S8, sure its still not as good as the dual writer setup they had back in the day but they gained a lot here; the 'solitude' of red dwarf (complete with background hum), a couple of funny lines... the real problem it tries way too hard and ends up being not funny. They just need to drop the slapstick completely and try not to be funny, let the words do the comedy like they used to do.

Doug Naylor needs some help on the scripts, preferably someone who can say 'no, that's a crap idea' once in a while.

As for the story, its lovecraftian self-reflection, done exactly the same in:

i thought the third episode was the best of the 3, with the inclusion of the female despair squid, and the third ep had a lot more laughs then the other 2 combined, the thing i liked about the first few series aswell was that it was just those 3 alone in space in a giant ship, but my favourite series is still 5, i agree about 7 and 8 though, they were bad, especially 8 when the entire crew of red dwarf came back.

It just goes to show which of the grant naylor partnership was the funny one.

The specials could've been better perhaps as 3 45mins-1hour episodes, so they had space to tell the story more instead of making it feel rushed

heh: "despair squid."

latest HEROES was irrelevant and wasted the momentum the series was building.

I tabled at a sci-fi & fantasy con a week ago, and the big cosplay thing (that I didn't recognize) was VAMPIRE KNIGHT & s2: Guilty. It's not available on US DVD atm. It only just aired in Japan (2008) according to wikipedia. Anyway, I can see why it's the big new thing. There's a lot to like about it. The animation is quality, and the overall series has a kind of FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST feel to it. It uses a similar animation style, and there are constant themes of brotherhood and determination amidst a pervasive sense of tragedy (or tragic past). That said, it's no FMA. In fact, it's very similar to every other anime vampire series in recent memory: BLOOD+, BLACK BLOOD BROTHERS. Anyway, it's good, but it's not on my short list, and it wraps up far too easily. There's no point, however, in additional seasons to flesh things out because the resolution was so...well...conclusive that anything else would be superfluous.

also watched the TERMINATOR 2-part finale. I doubt the show will be back next year. I would like it to return...but I doubt it will, and I don't know how FOX could bring it back given the shows that they drop. So I figure the series is doomed.

LIFE season finale was also watched and relatively enjoyed. NBC are complete morons if they don't bring this show back, but I get the feeling they won't because it's not NCIS: LA. :?

oh! I also watched I LOVE YOU, MAN recently - if I didn't already mention it. It's pretty good without being special in any way. rashida jones does not do it for me personally. looks a bit emaciated or something, I think? iunno.

Okay, lets try to recall.

Watched:
The Drunken Master - back when Jackie Chan films were great. Enjoyed this action comedy, same silly asian plotlines and crap editing, but fight scenes are great and the Drunken styles are great.

Fist of Legend - Without a doubt the best Jet Li films I've seen, absolutely no nonsense here, fast straight to the punch (or impressive kicks) martial arts flick. Has some cultural subtext too which just makes the movie better.

The Mutant Chronicles - Was presently suprised by this one, the quality of the sfx was below par but it worked with the budget to make a nice 'epic' silly fantasy / horror / scifi world. I enjoyed it but its rather cheesey.

The Burrowers - Very good horror film. Has shades of Tremors about it, but it does really well with similar material, keeps your interest. I would recommend this title. Even the ending I enjoyed, which is really the big hit and miss points with horror films.

On the TV side of things, watched Lost that continues its trend of being much better than previous seasons, and is actually interesting and feels to be going somewhere again. Doubt they'll keep it up but it was noteworthy this week.

South Park was brilliant. There's no point singing its praises every week, it deserves praises but I might as well just schedule an automated post :googley:
