finished CODE GEASS: Lelouch of the Rebellion. s1 & s2. it was indeed very much like DEATH NOTE in a ROBOTECH-like sci-fi future. so I'll continue with the comparison. I prefer CODE overall, but just the first half of DEATH NOTE remains superior. CODE is a more traditional epic/myth in that it conforms to the same kind of mythemes you get from Homer to Hamlet. my choice of classic works is intentional. the series presents complex heroes engaged in grand exploits while the narrative itself adopts the aristocratic ideals you get in Homer (as opposed to staged tragedies which were more about the "modern man" in that same situation). the HAMLET thing is more obvious: the main character is of the hamlet mold, literally clogging rivers the corpses of his numerous ophelias (innocent and unintentional victims). but because the series conforms to the "aristocratic ideals" alluded to earlier, you already know more or less how things are going to turn out for the two foils/protagonists. this is not the world of BERSERK where evil or error can go unpunished. the resolution is fitting and dramatically balanced (in a way that DEATH NOTE was not after L). you could argue that DEATH NOTE, too, followed this pattern. But again, once L wasn't there, the series pretty steadily came down. whereas CODE experienced a similar lull due to what I'd say was a ill-advised resolution-revelation in the last quarter of s2/r2. so I liked it. I'll lump it in with the anime that's worth watching. but it's not up there with 12 KINGDOMS or FMA or BERSERK or the first season+ of DEATH NOTE. It's closer to MY-HIME with a more serious approach and epic scope (but the same silly premises/situations like being based out of a school).

oh. and there's also some extras scenes of girls taking each others' clothing off and skinny dipping in a bathhouse. it was weird mostly because the series itself isn't graphic or superfluous with the ecchi/titty parade stuff.

Just the same old episodes, South Park last week was funny, simpsons seems to have upped its graphics and its very heavy on CGI, flight of the conchords is funnier than before but the songs are worse than last season.

I watched the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven which I thought was pretty good.

Might watch a film, not sure what i should watch though... any recommendation of good epic movies i might not have seen?

MISS MARCH. R-rated sex comedy that lacks the sex and the comedy. some gross-out gags that are heavy on the gross and light on the laughs. whether you like the genre or not, it's movies like this that show just how good the Farrelly Brothers (SOMETHING ABOUT MARY) really are - and yes, they are. skip it fo sho!

Amid intense lobbying in the European Parliament next Monday's vote on the proposal to extend the term of copyright has been struck off in a shock move. Following a meeting of the presidents of the political groups in the European Parliament on Tuesday, and with controversy and a lack of consensus surrounding the proposal, MEPs have delayed voting till the end of April - just before this summer's European elections. A trialogue discussion between the European Commission, Council and Parliament, set for the end of March, will now attempt to broker a deal to see if the directive will be allowed to pass.

MEPs are waking up to the reality that the proposal to extend copyright term doesn't do what it says. It's a terrible and unworkable instrument that will do nothing but bring copyright into disrepute in the eyes of consumers. If you're concerned about the need for a fair and balanced copyright framework you must contact your MEPs now (1). Make your voice heard!

In other news this week Professor Martin Kretschmer, Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy & Management Bournmemouth, and Horace Trubridge, Assistant General Secretary of the British Musicians' Union, have been debating the copyright term extension proposal (2). Additionally copyright creators in the Association for Fair Audiovisual Copyright in Europe have launched a petition against the proposal (3).

But right now the most important thing is to contact your MEPs (4) and tell them why copyright term extension is a bad idea (5)! Use our web banners (6) and spread the word.

As i've always said Resident Evil Games FTW

Capcom's Resident Evil 5 has outsold the latest album by rock group U2 since its release on March 13.

According to statistics compiled by Verdict, the Africa-set action game sold more copies than every record in the UK singles chart, including digital downloads.

It also shifted more units than U2's latest number one album No Line On The Horizon and generated more sales than the top five movies at the UK box office.

Capcom's UK PR manager Leo Tan said: "This is proof if any were needed that games are the entertainment medium of choice in 2009."

Tan claimed that Resident Evil 5 provides "hundreds of hours of entertainment at a relatively low cost - and it's this value for money that consumers are increasingly responding to".

In total, the Resident Evil franchise has sold in excess of 40 million copies around the world, which is said to equal one unit for every 170 people

seeing as to how I didn't actually like TROY, that won't be a problem.

The top tier of sci-fi epics is pretty small. and none of it is new. so in other words, there's no point recommending STAR WARS or STAR TREK movies.

And I know you don't like or have already seen the stuff that comes to mind from historical fiction and fantasy: ROB ROY, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, BEN HUR, CLEOPATRA, GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART, LotR, PATRIOT. and whether you've seen it or not, I seriously doubt you don't already know about LAST SAMURAI.

that does remind me of some other eastern crossovers though: FORBIDDEN KINGDOM, CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN PLOT, 7 SAMURAI, SHOGUN (tv series?), HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, HERO.

There's a bunch of civil war stuff: GETTYSBURG, GLORY, NORTH AND SOUTH (tv), GONE WITH THE WIND. again, guessing you already know or wouldn't care.

I've been scouring the anime genre for (fantasy) epics because there's nothing I haven't seen a dozen times in the mainstream. if you can deal with anime aesthetics, 12 KINGDOMS and FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST are phenominal (FMA is more of a typical anime series while KINGDOMS is more traditional WILLOW/NEVER ENDING STORY)

I personally love FLIGHT OF THE DRAGONS, but I don't pretend to have a rigorously justifiable rationale for it.

I believe DUNGEON SIEGE is supposed to be epic. you can have at that.

I also really liked GOLDEN COMPASS, but that has more to do with the book than the movie.

now if you're still reading this, wouldn't you agree that it spared us all time, energy, and brain cells that we'll never get back just for me to say no. nothing comes to mind?

oh btw: the outfits in 300 are interesting from a pop culture perspective.

I liked Glory, i have it on vhs still from back in the day, lol by dungeon siege do you mean that uwe boll movie, with jason statham in? that's one statham movie i wont watch due to the uwe boll connotations

seriously though, I'm more interested in HALO WARS. is that coming to PC? I think it's utterly and completely FUBAR that a high quality RTS is made strictly for a console. I mean...WTF? and I think it has real potential too. at least until STARCRAFT 2.

anyway...lemme know how EMPIRES TW is. I was unimpressed with MEDIEVAL 2. not because it was a bad game. I hardly played it. I just felt "been there. done that" with the setting and troops and such.
