somewhere...in china? :wacky:

I've seen CASABLANCA and PSYCHO too. spud has a point. it's prolly the most critically acclaimed comic I can think of. and it was when I was reading comics too. but, and this but is bigger than J-Lo's butt, nothing about WATCHMEN has seeped its way into popular culture the way "here's lookin' at you kid," "use the force, Luke," or parodies of Janet Leigh's shower scene have. I think that's what maxy was saying. I liked x-men. then I liked batman or spidey or darkness, etc. they were different worlds from WATCHMEN. completely different. WATCHMEN was just an old comic with badly drawn characters (and drawing is prolly the biggest "draw" to mainstream comics) who had particularly gay costumes and names I'd never heard of. star wars was an action figure phenomenon throughout the 80s. and although I wasn't even born until 1978, I remembered episode 4 vividly when I was only 5 years old (and obviously later). dunno. maybe it was different for you but...well...for one thing, if I had never heard of SW and watched episode 4 for the first time tomorrow, I'd prolly laugh it off as if it were 300.

point of curiosity: I only saw STRAW DOGS because my father bought the vhs when I was a kid. pure luck. never would've heard of it otherwise. ;)

i was born in '82 dink, but yeah that was what i was getting at, i just didn't word it quite the same

I do remember seeing the yellow smiley with a wink and a red splash through it, at random stages throughout my life, but it never really intrigued me more then "oh look a yellow smiley face... pass it by" whereas seeing a pic of darth vaders face before seeing sw wouldve made me go "ooh looks cool, might have to check it out"

Anyway getting back on topic (and i realise what i'm about to say may make any point i've made to do with watchmen null and void) watched Knight Rider 2008 Season 1 finale, more Real Ghostbusters, and a couple of mortal kombat featurettes i happened to find on the mule called Mortal Kombat - The History of Fatalities and The History of Mortal Kombat 1992-2004 both released on mule by silencer (whomever he may be)

Also preordered some comics

Resident Evil 5 (6 issue mini starting march 13th)
The Flash: Rebirth (5 issue mini)
Solomon Grundy (7 issue mini)

I may also get the terminator salvation 4 issue mini prequel, and indiana jones tomb of the gods, though i'm currently undecided on those

I think you are being a little harsh.. complaining that a comic book movie is not realistic is a bit weird... I mean it Is a comic book... Batman is about as realistic as triplet supermodels sleeping in my bed.. but people except that..even though... I did think the "evil alternative" world was not that unrealistic.. I mean the US was only a few steps from fascism during the McCarthy era... it is not to long a shot to go from that time in the US to full blown fascism.

I think the film is great and totally recommend it. It is adult, violent, doesn't pull ay punches, is practically page for page from the comic.. I mean it even has the same dialogue. I think those articles Supd posted are totally out of date, as this movie is baicly like 300 .. as in it used the comic as a story board for the film itself.... it is practically frame for frame.

Anyway.. I think it is great. This director makes comic book movies that are like the comics... he doesn't dumb them down or try to "re-write them to make it better" He doesn't cut back on the violence, or the sex, or the "points" I mean the for example the murder investigation is about a cold blooded killer who shoots dead a pregnant woman to cover his affair with her, rapes his friend and then latter comes on to his own daughter... and this is the guy that the film makes you identify with and the entire start of the film is about avenging his death.... try getting something that hardcore into Wolverine Origin....

To be honest I simply can not believe that you do not like it Dink.. I mean after watching the kind of crap that has come out of Hollywood the last few years.. you then see a film that is genually daring and "edgy" and give it the cold shoulder.. saying.. Bring my more standardized crap please... :( Depressing

snyder doesn't have an original bone in his body. and you clearly haven't read 300 if you think he makes comic book movies that are like the comics. he's a visual arts major who is woefully deficient in the literary aspects of film. he takes other people's works of art and creates hollow imitations of them. I cringe when people compliment him for that. SIN CITY was a comic book movie done like a comic - properly. snyder is just a kid with a photocopier. throwing up some blood and tits for an r-rating does not make his work mature or adult. give christopher nolan that freedom, and snyder wouldn't get another movie the rest of his life.

granted, WATCHMEN was a pretty impossible task.

did you not see the costumes? bah. forget it. I'm not getting into this. you're seeing what you want to see. I said I didn't buy into the world. and I had no emotional investment in the comic beforehand whereas batman/superman/spidey are part of the fabric of american culture. anyway, it's called suspension of disbelief. it wasn't happening. and the director clearly doesn't want it to happened based on the numerous hint hint wink wink moments.

the movie is ok. and that's as good as a zack snyder movie can hope for.

this is going to end up like one of those "max likes knight rider spud hates it" arguments isn't it, the ones where were both to stubborn to accept other people might have a differing opinion then our own

I disagree, Terry Gilliam was attached as director in the 80s. That would have been fantastic, probably nothing like the comics, but it would have been something to marvel* at.

you fart?

didn't he direct THE BROTHERS GRIMM? that was a bit meh for a movie with such a rich literary conceit. alan moore comics are heavy on the allegory and metaphor.

a friend who loved the comic and the movie informed me that the "super powers" that didn't make any sense in the movie didn't exist in the comic. shockingly, snyder threw in an absurd plot wrinkle because it "looks cool" but doesn't conform to the logic of the world in which the story is set.

been watching two anime series: MORIBITO and MUSHI-SHI. the former is going very well. the latter is quite boring.

... I tried to let it die.. but just can't.....

What superpowers are he talking about? The only charicter with powers in the comic or film is Dr Manhatan and that guy that can catch teh bullter everyone else has nop powers.. and that is exactly how it is in the book. And what "plot wrinkel" are you taking about... there is no added plot that is not in the comic.

guy moves so fast he can catch a bullet. guy and girl break people in half during street fight. first freaking scene in the movie is like a fight between two terminators. but oh. no. no super powers. they're all just really strong and really fast. "super fast" you might say. ;)

I am not angery.. more just .. i dunno... depressed, stunned even. I spend so much time wishing that hollywood would make more movies like this.. as in adult content, non formulaic and original. That when one comes out i look for others to like it and when poeple like dink, who have a decent apreciation of films can miss the point so entirly. I spend so much time seeing films and thinking.. who the fuck do they make these for.. who in there right mind thinks these are good... and now i realise that most people DO think they are good. I am truly alone. Did i expec t more from you guys.. yes i did.. I thought you all would be open and acepting orf original thought but in truth you are as bad as most others.. the reson most film suck is becuase of YOU lot and the billions like you.

I'm outa here

there's a major hole in your theory: I don't think much of most films, and I think most "epic" hollywood movies suck. so it's a bit much to go off the deep end there. on the other hand, I am a european white male. so I am more or less the target audience for all things western world. I would suggest, rather than missing the point (alan moore is about as obtuse as george romero), I wasn't impressed with it. it's a commonly held misconception (that now exists on the level of language/idiom itself) that ignorance/understanding is the key to (aesthetic) pleasure. I think that's shite, myself. but then...I also turn to that formulation when someone disagrees with my declaration of (aesthetic) beauty. In any case, their abilities ARE souped-up in the movie. I was flipping through my friend's ABSOLUTE EDITION (which I had just sold him) while he answered my question. In other words, I was looking right at the comic panes in question. And even if they were not, I said it didn't make sense. I didn't "buy it." which is to say, what flies in a comic book doesn't necessarily do so in live action. but you already know this. ;)

the way i see it not everyone will like or indeed has to like the same things, god knows the world would be a boring place if we did, but as human males (incidently i wasn't aware you were european dink, always assumed you were american/canadian) it's our right to want to prove our opinion is the correct one and everyone else who disagrees with us is wrong

It's all personal taste, and yeah you are the only one whose seen it dink our of the people not bothered about it, ie me and you
