this was in my inbox today, we are fighting for the copyright extension law to not go through

Today, organisations representing consumers, citizens and libraries around the world united to condemn copyright term extension in Europe. The joint statement was sent to MEPs who sit on the committees that will decide the flawed Term Extension Directive's future. It read:

= STATEMENT BEGINS =

The European Parliament is being asked to nearly double the term of copyright afforded to sound recordings. Industry lobbyists suggest that extending copyright term will help increase the welfare of performers and session musicians. But the Term Extension Directive, which will be voted on by the Legal Affairs Committee in a few weeks' time, will do no such thing. Instead it will hand millions of euros over to the world's four major record labels, money that will come direct from the pockets of European consumers. The majority (80%) of recording artists will receive between €0.50 - €26 a year.

Helping poor recording artists is a commendable aim. But the Term Extension Directive insults these good intentions. Andrew Gowers, former editor of the Financial Times, who conducted an independent review into the intellectual property framework for the UK Government in 2006, has called it out of tune with reality. Professor Bernt Hugenholtz, who advises the European Commission on intellectual property issues, has called it a deliberate attempt on behalf of the Commission to mislead Europe's Parliament. If passed, the Term Extension Directive will have serious consequences for Europe's IP policy.

*Any extension of copyright term will take money directly from consumers' pockets. It will also consign a large part of Europe's cultural heritage to a commercial vacuum.

*Europe's leading IP research centres have clearly shown the proposal does not do what it purports to do - help the poorest performers. It is simply a windfall for the owners of large back catalogues and the top earning performers.

*The proposal will undermine public respect for copyright law and introduce an unworkable and unproven framework for copyright, at the very time when Europe's copyright framework needs to be at its most robust.

We therefore ask you to vote to reject this directive, as per Amendment 15 of the ITRE opinion (David Hammerstein).

= STATEMENT ENDS =

As well as EFF, Open Rights Group and Consumer Focus, the statement was signed by BEUC, the umbrella organisation representing 42 consumer rights organisations in Europe, EDRI, the umbrella organisation representing 29 privacy and civil rights organisations across Europe, and IFLA, the umbrella organisation representing over 650,000 library and information professionals worldwide. You can download the full statement here (1).

Thanks to everyone for the great response to the cartoon we released last week (2). It's already had over 14,000 views, been translated into Spanish, and it's currently eleventh in YouTube's top favourited News and Politics videos (not bad for the week Obama got inaugurated). But the battle is by no means won yet - please, if you can, come to our event in Brussels (3), or invite your MEP to come on your behalf.

Yours, the Sound Copyright Team

welfare of musicians and session performers

yeah, cuz the lives of Lars Ulrich, Tommy Lee, and Jon BonJovi are so devoid of wealth and privilege!

who the fuck would agree to something as smug as that in a financial climate as dire as this? tell them to stop using ticket master and find a studio that offers equitable publishing deals, THEN come bitching to me about your album I'd never waste the money on in the first place.

finally saw IN BURGES. I liked it. dunno about best actor (haven't seen many of the contenders), but the bitching about colin farrel is unfounded. he was good in this movie.

latest SMALLVILLE. there's a smack down fight between Mercy and Lana. while it was going on, a thought popped into my head: "this is the most intense action sequence they've done in years, possibly ever on this show, and it's a cat fight between two chicks. and I'm watching a show about Superman!"

iirc, my next thought was "no flights; no tights has GOT to go."

the ep was fine - even good. not complaining about that. just sort of...iunno...a cosmic joke or something.

the fight between superman and doomsday in front of the world launchign him as "superman" (this what i think will happen) better be fuckn good man... after 8 years of what you are talking about in the post above.

I have been watching old war movies recently.. um nto as in old movies.. as in about old wars. I saw this Ken Burnns doco called "The Civil War" and have been watching them after that.

Gettysburg 8/10 - Frickn long but a good film.. treat it like a mini series and watch 40 mins or so in a go over a few nights and the near 5 hour time will not be a problem. Very cool.

Glory 7/10 - Pretty cool film... about first free black battalion. Pretty cool, and according to the info i saw in the ken burns Doco... pretty accurate.

Gods and Generals - 5/10 Pretty cool... maybe i was getting board of the subject matter by now... but this film really didn't bring much to it

Legionnaire - 2/10 - Really bad, has a few good character actors in it that make it worth watching but after a whiel you are wondering around putting dishes in the washing machine and not paying attention anymore... Cool consept.. a movie about teh legion but yea.. no go

Got a ton more in my que... Next are a few old ww1 films.

Watched those marvel cartoons max posted. Not bad... Thor was by far the weakest of the two... Pity, as it was a good idea for a story.. just sorta missed the mark. The hulk is truly a great character I am still waiting for a good comic book movie.. I think the Hollywood guys haven't quite got it yet.. they just nvr have the scale of what is needed.

There is a great hulk serial called "The Package" witch is a massive universe wide series, running though a lot of different titles. Where Banner is kidnapped and drugged and moved about the place from one comic to the other, everyone fighting over him. It is freakn awesome. Banner is basically just this lab rat, and people trying to steal him / save him, experimenting on him, trying ot kill him for the greater good w/e. Next to some of the modern punishers it has some of the most full on stuff (for marvel).. I mean by the end of the comic you are just angry yourself about how bad banner has had it.. you are angry.. it is great writing... and of course at the end FINALLY after all this build up the hulk awakens and just fucks everyone up.. all the bad guys and good guys have to team together to fight him it is frickn sweet. Like world war hulk he rages across a number of titles... and end off with him hitchhiking on the side of the road as banner like it started. That 2nd movie kind of reminded me of that, but like about 1000th of the scale.

Ths is the cartoon i am waiting for

HULK is philosophically interesting, but I think it's a really hard live action movie. It should work as a psychological thing ala the old live action series. I'm talking about the tone and basic plot. To be honest, I think the latest INCREDIBLE HULK movie did a decent job of blending that loner on the run theme with the basic demands of an action movie, but the results were still...iunno...unmoving. I kind of like how he was used in the AVENGERS stv movies. It's kind of shite to have him in control of his green side, but it's equally gay to manufacture an "abomination" for him to square off against. maybe that's it? maybe outside of the government, which he more or less avoids fighting rather than can't, he doesn't have any good nemesis. Superman has the problem too. Outside of Zod. Lex is classic, but you're not exactly letting Superman be Superman if he's squaring off against a mere human (the SUPERMAN - DOOMSDAY stv played with that fact rather nicely). Darkseid would be cool, but the scope is too big, I think. I would hate to see it turn into another RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER thing. Anyway, TDK is in IMAX this week at the new local imax theater. I think I'd like to give that a look for my first imax movie.

just got back from UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS. I must say, I was impressed. This was supposed to be an stv prequel? It was leaps and bounds better than the meandering UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION movie. I enjoyed it. It's by no means a great movie, but it's a solid action-fantasy flick in about the same league as the original. A very nice rebound. If the SW prequels were merely this decent, I would be a very happy camper.

Speaking of which, watched the latest CLONE WARS and BSG eps. Former was decent; latter was bleah but better than the prior ep.

I saw Underworld: Rise of the Lycans a minute or two ago. My review is pretty much meh! Not bad, not great. Some nice set dressing... I don't think this was ever intended to be STV (surely?), the budget is way too high for that and they've made a shed load every outing.

see i heard rise of the lycans was also maybe not stv, but not a big hollywood official sequel

Anyway watched Death Race simply because i do enjoy Jason Statham action flicks, there were some ok set peices during the races but most of the scenes between races were mostly just filler fluff
