got some free movie money and watched THE DARK KNIGHT again. so I guess I'm going to kick a dead horse. liked it even more this time around. I'm going to reverse my waivering again though. Donnie Darko's sister is a much better performance than Katie Holmes. The only thing that even slightly bothered me about this movie were the two scenes where Batman has extended conversations with the Joker and then with Two Face. but I was really keeping an ear/eye out for dawes and the voice and places where the movie drags. I'll hit the last one first cuz it's easiest:

tbh, it's edited quite well. there are no extraneous scenes from the opening to the last 5 minutes. And the action is packed throughout while still fitting seamlessly with the story. I thought about cutting down a few of the scene transitions though: the big helicopter shots of gotham and hong kong. I wanted to try that just to excise any and all extraneous material because it's a long movie. but I'm not sure how those cuts would have looked, so it's impossible to sit here and say it should have been done. I'm curious to see what it would do though.

oh! and there was exactly one retarded moment in the whole movie: the cgi bike flip maneuver, which left me wondering why more than anything else. completely unnecessary michael bayism.

last thing along this train of thought is the ending, which just feels rushed. and it is rushed. and it's hurt by the extended conversations involving batman speaking. brilliant up to and including the Joker plot. Two Face works logically but...well...rushed. I also did not care for the facial fx. looked too unbelievable for my tastes. I would have gone with more flesh; the multiple holes in the head was kinda...iunno...they had a "how's he even alive?" feel to it. the hospital scene was fecking brilliant. I loved the joker throughout, but the way he walked and the expression on his face coming out of the hospital was the shot of the film.

last thought: batman was in the light a bit too much. I get that it's part of the plot that he's in the spotlight too much. that's not what I'm talking about. there's that scene at 50 52nd street or whatever the day after the explosion, and he's just standing there being iconic (more like ironic), and all I can think is, "that's not batman. batman does not stand there in almost broad daylight with 50 people standing around." it was an image very fitting for superman but entirely wrong for batman.

also, I did not care for the voice over at the end (again), but I guess I can begrudge them that cuz they're already pushing the envelope at 2.5 hours.

TROPIC THUNDER. pretty good. lots of laughs. could've been a lot better (too much zoolander-type stuff), but still lots of good - and some VERY good - sketch comedy stuff in this.

cross-posting from FH:
STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS (2008)
hmm. It's an all around superior movie in comparison to Episodes 1 & 2. Then again, that's not sayin' much, is it? It was exactly what it looks like: a cgi version of the prequels. The fact that it's animated rather that live action, however, makes all the childish dialogue and abrupt (never really finished/intellectually complete scene) cuts tolerable. I won't say it's better than Episode 3 because there was some pretty decent bad-assery in RotS. This was lighter than the CLONE WARS shorts series done in the SAMURI JACK style a few years ago, and the jedi bad-assery in the earlier series was more significant than this. However, this is perfectly adequate for what it is (supposed to be): a cartoon that had its first few eps mashed together and thrown on the big screen. The only thing that bothers me is that I've seen RotS, so I already know who dies where. Also, there's no opening crawl. That's pretty fucking unforgivable to this fanboy. I would rather the movie, and especially the impending series, deal more with completely new characters - such as that rogue jedi-on-the-run series that was also greenlit around the time of THE CLONE WARS getting announced. I'll eat this up because it's star wars and I don't demand a whole lot from Saturday morning cartoon fodder (remember when they actually showed cartoons on Saturday mornings?). I'm not sure what the animation fiends will think of this, but I was more into this than BEOWULF (after the initial Grendal fight, which was awesome). These fx work for me. I actually really liked the look of the clones in it. their dirtied armor looked cool. iunno. plus, this means more star wars toys, and SW toys rock.

and jynks: I'm not ignoring you. but that movie looked so impossibly bad, that I never even thought about seeing it. so I can't comment.

I know... there is just somthign about it.. the film is bad.. garish even... but i can not remeber the last time i went into a cinima and saw somthign I HAVE NEVER seen before... this movie.. love it or hate it.. is an original....(yea i know that sounds stupid cause of the fact it is a movie-make of a tv show) but imo that counts for somthing.

I predict that the guy from V 4 Vendetta who played the voice of england will become a staple movie bad guy... Corperation bosses, Politictions etc etc.. His voice is just to cool when doing "evil ranting speeches"... Vendetta had it.. Speed had it.. I amd willing to bet this will sorta be his thing when ever you see him.. and good stuff to as he is really good at it.

Hell Boy 2

This was much better than the first, it seemed overly packed with characters and what little plot it had, but i think it was just a pretty fest at heart. Its better than 90% of comic book tat out there, looks wonderful and really had a strong and defined fantasy look that really sold the film for me, but it was all pretty souless.

Well worth watching.

I dunno.... i sorta like Hellboy2 but it is like a hit and miss thing.. somtimes it works so well that sort of "bucking athority, I just want to be loved" sorta thing... (witch is like 100% the comic that whole angle about wanting aceptence and wot not) but at other times I am like.. Man.. this guy is ment to be a freakn Demon.. show us some badness or somthing...

I mean... singing? Need i say more??

On a good note i was reading about that director Guillermo del Toro guy and he was saying that he is very very keen to do a 3rd film all based on the unexploed plot of the comics.. the armageddon itself.. where he destroys the world.. so i think i may get to see this more hardcore version of hellboy latter...

PS - For those that know wat i am talking about.. in the same artical he said he is in the process of trying to get the final green light on "In the mountians of Maddness" 00000hhhh yea!!!!

there will be no hardcore version. c'mmon. get real.

del toro's a fan and all, but there's absolutely zero chance that a third movie changes direction in any significant way with the same director and the same cast and the same studio.

and just to cool your jets even more, the great david goyer said almost the exact same thing about - wait for it - BLADE 3.

hahaahahah

Been orginising my movie archive now... i got some new drives... all 1Tb each... and moving my moves from dvd to the disks.. Much better... instead of having dvd cases full of 100s of dvds and using some crappy database app to make the movies easyer to search...

Stuff that.

Now i just use XBMC (windows version + Xbox version) to database them all and i have all 3K of films at a single click to watch if i want... + xbmc stores the posters , plots, actors etc etc detals... it is freakn awesome

check it out xbmc.org They make a mac, windows, xbox and linux version...

Anyway, as i have been goign tough these i have been watching tons of films recently....

One of teh ones I really liked was the ILLUSIONIST. came out about teh same time as the prestige but was sorta over looked... very cool flick.. check it out guys.

Also just woundering how you guys handel your archives?

I don't think I dl nearly as much as anyone else here, but I keep the ones I like and del the others after watching and del the ones I like when/if I get a retail copy.

so except for a few BD images on my fileserv, most of my storage space is taken-up by music folders. I just leave them the hell alone and let foobar/wmc/itunes organize things at the GUI level. and it all fits a few 500g hdds scattered throughout the network including various levels of redundancy (ww?).

SHOOTER.
I don't see why people jump on this movie for being crapzilla the return. it has a stupid plot device to get thing going, but it's not boring. that's the knock over at FH. and...well...it's just not. it moves along at a quick pace. it's otherwise inocuous, and I don't wanna come off singing its praises or anything, but it's just not something so bad as to beat it with the critic stick. mark walberg and danny glover's accents did annoy me though.
