I picked-up a copy of the His Dark Materials trilogy yesterday, and while I was looking for it, I stumbled upon a complete set of Lemony Snicket's SoUE books. Damn! It was pretty big. There are quite a few of them. It looked like at least 10. And relatively thick for kids' books (but smallish pages). also bought a shel silverstein book for the rug rat.

The first film is based on novels 1-3 or something, and there's umpteen million books I'm both hoping for a sequel, and not hoping for a sequel because i don't want it spoilt.

anywho...watched Resident Evil: Extinction last night. Prolly cuz I'm on the I am Legend kick still. Is it just me, or did the beasties in this movie franchise go from fast-moving badies (ala dawn of dead remake) to slow ass zombies that would lose a race to romero's zombies? anyway, it was watchable - and fairly quick if derivative and pointless.

I saw "Stir of Echoes" and it is a good movie. Not great but good, with some excellent special effects, quality cast, and really good screenplay. It's one of those movies that were sadly overshadowed by other "similar" movies being released just before this one was released. I think it was a matter of weeks after "The Sixth Sense" IIRC. It's the same story as with "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact".

Damn, I was still gathering my pieces together from the Xmas morning fallout, so I guess I wasn't clear enough on the Geiger... it's way better than 6th Sense IMO only it came out a few weeks after that one so most ppl ignored it for a long time. There should be good quality rips for it available by now but it's safe to say you won't regret it if you buy it on DVD if you get a chance. It is similar to 6th on some points but I wouldn't compare it directly.

I'm gonna start my Xmas movie marathon now... coffee... check, wine... check, cookies... check, phones off the hook... check, pillows left & right... check... right... should do it... I'm off

I actually liked (not loved!) the sixth sense, so maybe not a good barometer for you here, but I liked stir of echoes, and it was definitely overshadowed by something similar - 6th sense sounds right..

anyway, it's a solid movie. it's not great. worth a watch. definitely doesn't "play" like 6th sense, just similar plot device: someone "sees" dead people and tries to solve a crime. The way it happens and its emphasis are not similar at all imo.

watched little children last night. I had expected and hoped for something more "tragic" or self-destructive. you know, like closer but with subtlety and being good - like happiness. instead, I thought I was watching a mother fucking christmas story. cannot fathom all the good critical reviews. kate winslett takes her clothes off and it's suddenly a good movie? started off well enough. and not a terrible movie. just...can't figure the universally good reviews I'd seen the past few months.

Neither was "good" but Deep Impact was still way better than the utter kak of Armageddon. And IIRC Deep Impact was released after the other one but I'm not sure... don't even give a damn actually. I only think that the science of DE was better scripted than that in the armagideon class poop of a movie but both fail on so many levels I've written at least one sentence about them too many already.

yes. Deep Impact was a far better crafted story on most levels. But that like saying it's a loose poo rather than diarrhea. (you're welcome for the christmas imagery as well. )

I just got back from Alien vs. Predator: Requiem. Here's the deal: it's a sequel to the catastrophe at the north pole. It just is. Accept it because that's where the story begins, and there's no getting around it. That said, it was probably the best ANYONE could do from that starting point (begins exactly where AVP ended btw). This is also, btw, a Predator movie. Emphasis on Predator not Predators. It's not the way I would have gone, but as I said, from the plot the movie has to work with, it does as well as it's fair to ask for from anyone (ok ok, the first statement was a little overstated - of course it could have been better, but not in any essential way without scrapping the already established mythologies). So where was I? Ok. It's a Predator movie. That's fine. AVP is more or less a Predator franchise anyway (the novels). That doesn't mean the aliens are handled poorly. Quite the opposite. I thought the use of dark and shadow was well done and far superior to A4 and AvP. Some of the alien teeth still looked too "slick" to me though. There's also a lot of shit that doesn't really get explained e.g., how the hybrid exists or why it's able to control the others like a queen or why it doesn't have to lay eggs, but all of that shit is superfluous to the movie. There's none of that horse shit like at the south pole where they read about and discover all of the background to the Aliens and Predators or all that shit. it's a lot like 30 days of night in that it shows you just enough to get the action going. and dude, this flick is merciless. I loved it. perfect antidote to christmas with the family.

the very ending, however, went some place I wouldn't have gone. actually, I think it tied back into the books a bit, which is where the movies should have begun, except...well...anyway...I'll have to go back and check the name of the heroine in the novels, but I'm pretty sure she makes an appearance in the tack-on scene that follows both climax and denouement (i.e., the promise of a sequel possibility-type scene): the military gets a hold of one of the predator's weapons and hands it over to her ("our world isn't ready for this technology" or something). iunno. I'll have to see it again. my feelings about the first AvP weren't this high the first time, but they tanked bigtime after the first viewing. will have to see how this one holds up. I'm thinking it will hold it's own as a solid AvP movie. obviously, I'll run out and see anything AvP though. so another viewing it is - later.

BSG: Razor. Good. As far as TV goes, very good. There was a little bit of horseshit about Starbuck that was a plant for the final season. I thought that was stupid, but it had nothing whatever to do with the actual movie, imo, so it's easy not to hold against it. oh yeah, the old cylon centurions/guardians actually looked pretty cool. stormtrooperish.

that reminds me, I saw a copy of the original BSG s2 for sale the other day. It just now occurs to me that I was told there was only one season of the show and a movie. the s2 pack was much smaller than the big plastic set released a few years ago, and it only cost $19. So I'm sure the content differs. Maybe that first boxed set was the entire series and this is just s2? iunno. imdb is worthless when it comes to tv shows (especially since tv seasons span multiple years )

with the original BSG there was the first season (30 eps i think) and a movie, then i believe it was about 5 or 6 years later they made season 2, where they find earth and try to intergrate themselves into our society.

Watched "T3:Raise of the Machines" again, this time in 1080p and using one of those 3D headphones with vibration effect to add to the bass levels. I noticed there were parts of the movie where my vocal chords would start vibrating in sync with some sounds in the movie. c00l almost like I had a built in modem as well Anyway, just thought to mention it cuz it scared the shit out of me in the first few seconds

Watched the Doctor Who christmas Special from yesterday, it was basically a complete rip off of Starship Titanic, the old pc game from... when was it, 95?, with added androids.

Kylie "i fought boob baddies and won and all i got was this lousy tshirt" Minogue was pretty good in her role (a farcry from her early days in neighbours), tennant was ok as usual, although i got the feeling at one point he just took things a bit too far, and went on some sort of john mcclane kick for a few minutes.

"listened" to the last half of cyborg 2 on showtime. crap movie, but I thought the chick was smokin' hot. turns out she was angelina jollie circa 1993. yowzers! still had the distinctive lips, but everything else looked so much better. tight! (omg. I swore I'd never use that word )
