the region thing is actually the biggest difference to me of all the issues y'all mentioned, and I didn't even know about it. it's the most immediate issue anyway.

well...if SONY really won't press unrated/uncensored titles (I'm not talking pr0n here; I mean extended cuts and whatnot that they simply don't PAY to have rated) AND SONY is responsible for pressing most of the bluray discs, then that trumps everything. I've only seen spud's ramblings and his quotes on it, and I have no reason to doubt him per se, but...well...whatever, I'm not buying anything now anyway, but I would like to see how that shakes out.

I'm bummed that Disney is exclusive to BD cuz they have a huge library of movies from their own house and lots of movie houses that they've sucked up like everything under touchstone. but it comes down to this for me: universal is HD-DVD. AoD is Universal. I'm onboard for HD-DVD.

regarding storage market, the very first discs and "reader" I saw was BD recordable discs and a burner. granted, the burner was about $1,000. but still, that was the first one I saw. haven't seen one in a LONG time tough. that's weird, isn't it? :? did they pull them or something?

anyway, it's going to take a while for 1080p to take hold (the hardware is only just now available - the content is really thin; it's just optical media; tv shows aren't even all 720p yet). so I'm not too worried about watching 1080p on 15g vs. 25g. but you'd have to be blind not to notice the superiority in storage specs.

the idea that BD is all SONY is kinda funny cuz...wasn't that the same case with betamax? which was also technically superior to vhs? or am I imagining that?

just got back from the golden compass. I liked it. it's a kids' movie. no getting around that. but so was SW. and GC feels like SW in its blending of action, diverse "worlds" and cornball dialogue (I use the term affectionately). anyway, it's good. lots of quality actors doing substandard but perfectly adequate work. there's a pretty clear delineation between "good guys" and "bad guys" that you get with SW also. I almost get the feeling that this little girl would wipe the floor with luke skywalker in the same way I thought that while TPM may have sucked ass, those jedi knights would have mopped the floor with vader or luke from the original trilogy. still though...she IS just a kid. and while not nearly annoying in the way little anakin was, I couldn't help wishing this wasn't a kid at the center of the story. anyway, far more advanced than the other child fantasy fare this year and more layered. people complained that it was confusing. I don't see what's confusing about it. in fact, I think you'd have to be a complete tool not to get it. whether it works or you accept how it works is another story, but it sure as hell isn't difficult to "get."

Frack I wanted to post a reply to that but my browser just jumped to the previous page when I hit backspace :wacky: I'm too lazy to write it all once more so you'll have to live without it :P

In other news, I watched "The Last Mimzy" yesterday  It wasn't anything special and to be frank I didn't expect it to be I just felt like a nice children's bed time story for a change. I slept like a baby for 10 hours straight then so I guess it did the trick :wacky: but 8)

Yea.. nothing worse than having 10 copies of the one film in a heap of different formats and releases. :)

The thing is BR may win out simply due to the fact of its name... dosn't matter how crap a product is if it advertising is good... and with hdtv, hdd, hd-dvd, blah blah blah blueray is easy to remember and identify.. that will go a long way to sell it to those that do not pay close attention.

Well... i think the point is that WB do not make porn. But say the anniversary edition of scarface.... it is films like that that we are worried about. Film made by the studios but not released in there proper formate due to censorship.

The thing that is freakning me out is that the war at the moment between the formats is making big publishers pick sides.. like disney for example... unless both formats servive together for ages it will be a long time before cross over happens... you will need 2 players

I weas also told that BR dose not play on Vista?

But surely not all BD titles are released by Sony right? Not that it matters to me any more... all this discussion over which one is better made me go browse for more info and I have decided to ditch my interest in BD completely. Mainly cuz of that lame region protection scheme as the order is for R1 (US) and I'm not sure what region my PS3 supports (it's at brother's place ATM anyhow and I don't think I'll see it any time soon). I have even changed my Amazon pre-order for Blade Runner Ultimate to HD-DVD format and not BD as I initially did. I guess it'll come on more disks than if I ordered it on BDs and prolly a few days later then but who cares. It's not like I'll watch one version and then want to watch another or some bonus material and be too lazy to swap the disks in the player (or xbox in my case). I might still consider BD for storage some day but as for the movies and such it's a good think we had this discussion ;)

It's not a news really it's just some footnote taken out of context and blown out of proportions by the other camp IMO. I'm subscribed to Sony's press releases (e-newsletter) and remember one message that had that same line in a completely different context regarding Sony as a label and not their policy on BD and its licensing. I'll try to find it but am subscribed to so many newsletters it's gonna be difficult (I used to work for a news company back in the days and am still subscribed as a professional LOL).

You misunderstand my concerns, Sony own the factories for Bluray production. Nearly all of them, if not all of them. Most publishers can not afford to build their own based on so little sales so are using their facilities and Sony is refusing pressings of certain movies (so far i've not heard much about the big horror movies, but certainly AO material has been refused). Its not pr0n that's a concern here, but films that push the envelope... unrated, banned, and blocked movies. I do a lot of importing to get around the BBFC. With HD-DVD i know i can just to another region and buy that, which bypasses both "only on bluray" and censored scenarios. If disney doesn't own the rights to publish a movie in one country, it may very well be a hd-dvd company that can publish there so there are a few options (although in disney's case, that's unlikely aince they are a global publisher)

HD-DVD are pressed at modified DVD pressings, which there are hundreds of more of around the globe. The startup cost for hd-dvd, and why we see consumer costs so low, is pittance.

Ultimately, both formats are selling like dog shit next to dvd. However, hd-dvd seems like an upgrade, but bluray i see as much a hinderance as an upgrade in storage space so I will not buy that format.

@max, PS3 is region locked, just not for bluray games. You will not be able to play region A blurays on your uk ps3 as they contain region encoding.
doing a google, top hit with a list of titles that won't play on your uk ps3 (any model):
http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=496872
Bluray region coding is much stronger than that of DVDs.

The only thing bluray has is storage, and frankly I made my decision for storage last year... hdd :)

QI Xmas special. Some parts were so funny I nearly pissed my pants like that spot the rabbit bit (or it might have been a deer?).

Also watched loads of other sitcoms and comedy panel shows preparing myself for Christmas spirit throughout this week: "Filthy, Rich and Catflap" was funnier with every episode, "Monkey Trousers" was absolutely hilarious only too short with only 6 episodes, and I'm still watching "Believe Nothing" (it has only a few sources on ed2k and am stuck at ep5/6 ATM), "Bang, Bang, It's Reeves and Mortimer", "Catterick - Reeves & Mortimer". Others that I'll watch next are "Vic Reeves Big Night Out", "Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)" (the year 2000 remake), and "Berry and Fulcher's Snuff Box". Also watched a few eps of "Shooting Stars" but can't watch more than a few eps in a row before my eyes start hurting cuz of rather poor recording quality.

I'll also be watching closely for all those UK comedy and sci-fi Xmas specials in the following weeks so I feel like a true and born Brit these days (less I won't be watching this weekend's boxing matches that don't interest me at all to be honest) ;)

watched V: The Original Miniseries which i have to say has held up quite well. Action sequences were good, it was very entertaining and worthwhile.

I watched the sequel series which had the addition of ironside, but wasn't quite as satisfying, and upped the corn status quite a bit.

Still worthwhile watching em :)

smallville was new this week. not particularly good either. not horrible in the way that most holiday themed shows are horrible. just not good. all I see these days are the faults of this show. super hot girl ain't in the ep either. but man-lois and chipmunk-lana are. :?

QI compilation ep. Was great but for the better of me didn't remember ever seeing most of it. I guess I'll just have to watch it all over again :wacky:

s2 of dexter. it was good. not up to snuff with s1 though. by comparison, s2 was all over the place. and the 5-10 minute wrap-up was way too fast and/or neatly gift-wrapped with a little ribbon around it and such. it's good. don't get me wrong. it's quality series. just...something felt missing by comparison with s1.

family guy. wheelchair guy "got new legs." was stupid. caught a syndicated ep later in the night where peter got plastic surgery and got a new "handsome" body. that was funny. actually, fat stewie was funny. and brian spinning him around was funny.

smallville was a rerun. dexter and brotherhood seasons are finished. thinking about watching gossip girl. it's getting good reviews. maybe watch the last season of 4400, but tbh, I stopped watching s3 cuz it was getting really fecking stoo-peed. iunno...what else is new and worth a look? been watching a lot of family guy reruns cuz it's on about 6 hours every day between 4 different channels.

iunno i have the same problem. 4400 was getting too soapy for my liking and stretched my patience to the limit with eps where nothing really happened so i quit watching it at about the same ep you have. other shows are on hiatus or cancelled altogether so there's really not much to watch. Journeyman is the only show i can think of atm that is at least semi-descent and is running without any breaks so far. other shows that i'm interested in will return no sooner than mid January. Bionic seems to be quite good too and the latest news denied it has been cancelled and should return after the holidays break. i'm mostly watching brit shows nowadays as they haven't been afflicted by that unfortunate strike and their shows normally return for the holidays with some xmas specials. sorry to have been not much of a help. cheers ;)
