i own the wraith on vhs somewhere, as i recall it was ok in places (the car racing/chasing scenes. but other then that it made little to no sense at all, and the flashbacks etc were all handled very poorly, but at the end of the day... it's a charlie sheen movie so you wouldn't expect a pearl from a bag of crisps would you

 at the b&w. iunno. I did write that a bit flippantly. but I do have this nervous feeling about clint and a ww2 movie. so it's not one of those "take this movie seriously: respect the great men who died for your freedom; soldiers are good guys" movies? I guess I'll still have to see them...eventually...

/sigh

@max: I know you hate westerns, but it's kind of funny to watch high plains drifter (these titles have nothing to do with anything!) as the wraith in a different setting. same crapass flashbacks too!

joe kid. if you're wondering, I got a good deal on two clint eastwood collection discs that contained high plains drifter, joe kid, and two mules for sister sarah. so guess what I'll be watching next? :wacky:

I thought joe kid was easily better than drifter or rider. eastwood did not direct this one, and the credits said it was written by elmore lenard. I wonder if that's the same guy who does the gangster stuff (jackie brown, get shorty, etc.)? gonna check that out in a minute. anyway, kid was closer to the spirit of the man without a name movies. more of a han solo character, less of an avenging angel/mysterious savior kind of guy.

edit: just back from imdb. yep, elmore leonard wrote'em all. kid has that tongue-in-cheek wit that the others lack.

MR is a good movie. worth watching. formulaic, but not so much as million dollar baby.

two mules for sister sara. not as good as joe kid but good. the best part of these discs is watching the theatrical trailers. "clint eastwood is - joe kid!" "clint eastwood is - hogan, mercenary for hire!" "clint eastwood is - apparently a bigger draw that the fecking movie we're trying to sell" ah...

forgot to mention I watched hitman the other day. never played the game. the trailer says a buncha shit that ain't even in the movie. and I do mean "says." "protected by divinity"? "the world needs him"? wtf? at the very least, that has nothing to do with the movie I saw. and it's a lot closer to out and out lying. :?

frankly, the movie would have been better had it followed the outline of the trailer.

it wasn't good. it wasn't horrible. the tits helped. I should've watched enchanted.

yea i saw benders big score.... i was sorta mixed about it.... like it seamed a little forced like they were trying to jam as many nods to the series as possible. squeezing in every charicter they could and stuff like that AND i HATE singing... i just fwd though both those songs and pretty much any song in any show.. (real sad about sweany todd being a musical.. wat a waste)

Still i thought it was pretty cool.. and a lot of that disappointment in it might be from the wait.... we were waiting for years for this one. You know when you build up a show before yu see it.

I thought he voice acting on the scammer main dude was so good... the voice was great and the word inflection timing just blew me away... really amazing stuff there.

"checking out my spronger, ah?" and "mmmmerhhh It's in his pants" rofl rofl rofl

I have to say I wasn't impressed.

The huge standards of futurama completely slipped for this one, it was too slapstick, too walk-on friendly, didn't hold the plot for its length, didn't have a plot worthy of the show and left me feeling bitterly dissapointed. These are all the problems that plague The Simpsons now, I hope they can shake them off damn fast and remodel these movies into futurama. Fuck the simpsons.

It was almost as if they'd suddenly traded writers with The Simpsons. It was the exact same kind of laclustre humour and "birrage" of poor jokes, they shouldn't have copied it and had someone vetting the script. Rob Grant and Doug Naylour slated the Simpsons writers in later seasons for what they do; according to them when key-flaws in the basic story emerge the writers try and patch it with "one-liners", and frankly, that's what the simpsons is and i fear that's what futurama might be now. Frankly, it describes the problem completely.

It was nowhere near as witty as it usually is and low on the plot driven jokes.

Voice acting was superb, animation was superb and music was superb... the script was not. i would have thought they'd be overflowing with brilliant ideas whipped up over the years since it was cancelled... maybe that was the problem? They just didn't stick to being Futurama.

I didn't mind the musical numbers, the one in Santa's workshop was better than the other.

I tried to like it, I really did... but i can't lie to myself and say that its as good as Futurama used to be. Initial reaction 6/10, dissapointing... Futurama should be better. Lousy writing.

well i have to agree with spud.. though i am not quite as harsh. I think it was disappointing.. but i am not so sure it isn't simply due to me waiting to see it for so long. I think that the next ones may be better... but we will see.

Watched "A Dog Day Afternoon" simply awesome.... go the 70's!!!!

beowulf 3D.

I can't remember the last time I tried to watch anything 3d, but I did flinch when the first truly 3d object came barreling toward my face. it wasn't imax, but it was surprisingly effective after my eyes adjusted (took a while for that - 2 trailers plus 5-10 mins of the movie).

the story is a "loud" blending of faithfulness to the source material and complete bastardization or as the lingo goes, "modernization." the first half of the movie is almost shockingly faithful (for a hollywood adaptation), and it's also the most effective part of the film. the second half of the movie is complete reinvention, not just the plot but especially the themes, the movie's essence and it's "lessons."

the uses of christianity in the movie were unoriginal and uninspired (they occur in an earlier movie called beowulf & grendal). To be honest, the second half of the movie is closer to greek tragedy than heroic epic. and I continue to maintain that the best integration of the "christian" element of the beowulf poem is 13th warrior where "islam" is substituted for "christian." otherwise, it just plays out like some lameass robin hood or camelot knockoff.

I would have really liked the final fight sequence - and I did like the other fight sequences - except there were some really over the top parallels/symbolism that made me guffaw a bit. and I still don't understand how what he didto himselfactually</i> helped even if I understand the idea behind it. also, should a dragon's heart be the same size as a human's heart? no. didn't think so either (and not, it doesn't matter whether it was a dragon or a shape shifter - it's a dragon at the time).

anyway, it's not a bad movie. it starts off as a really excellent beowulf movie and then falls victim to every ancient-to-modern adaptation pitfall in the book. but it still manages to be a decent movie on its own. it's not beowulf. but it has to be beowulf cuz the whole first part is beowulf verbatim. bit of a tricky situation they carved-up for themselves. I'm both impressed with the fidelity and repulsed by the blatant butchery that has nothing whatever to do with "beowulf" but still claims the name.

It's really not an option for THIS film, but in general, I groan at these movies that take ancient works, completely gut the hell out of them, but then keep the names. I mean...is it really asking to much that if you turn Hamlet into a children's fable that you rename the goddamn thing</i> like they did with Lion King? Or 13th Warrior? or 10 Things I Hate About You?

final thought on the animation: generally very effective, but the render of people's hands stood out as being comparatively incompetent. yes, female vs. male facial features were a bit emotionless, but they were nowhere nearly as unrealistic as most peoples' hands looked to me (usually while reaching for a sword or a cup of meade).

yea, this film is a kind of test... so no comments about the technology are needed.. we all can see even from the previews that there is still a lot to be done in this department.... still i do not think anyone can deny that they are getting A LOT better at realistic 3d animated films.

Beowolf was the 2nd book i ever read when i was like around 4 years old. First being time machine. I totally love that book and i felt the same as dink about the story. It started well and then went into "what the hell am i watching" zone. You sorta have to ignore that the movie is based on the book... as it is nothing like it.... just pretend it is a random fantasy tale.

3D dosn't work on me.. so i can not comment on that... due to the fact that i have monocular vision :(

Well another example of how actors will soon be gone and only voice actors will remain... and it WILL happen.. anyone who says it won't is just fooling themselves. not yet.. but soon mabey 30 years or so max.
