 credit where credit's due. that was nice.

spudthedestroyer wrote:Halo is pretty shite I thought, even for a console fps. :? I'd take HL story over halo any day, or a plethora of others that aren't so cornball.

meh. it's archetypal/mythic (like most vg). I like it. I like BSG (scorched earth, humanity's last stand, etc.) it's not new or special. looks better than most other stuff though. and it is quality. you might say quality trash (like sinking millions into ILM to make transformers look good then having them hide behind houses and piss on good actors).

anyway, finished the solo campaign. disappointed by how quick it was. I think CoD2 lasted longer. picked up CoD3 (finally!) cuz it was down to $20. not sure if I'll spin that disc next or gears of war (which is ACTUALLY supposed to be the best 360 fps?). can't get interested in CoD4. it looks too much like every tom clancy game I've ignored for years. most of the appeal of CoD to me was the fact that it was historical fights. guess that's why I never got into C&C either. if you're going to cross the wall, do it running. don't stand five feet away on the other side.

sci-fi weapons vs. real weapons don't bother me. especially since everything sci-fi has an analog in rl anyway. you'd have to be an idiot not to figure out what each does in 5 seconds time (based on limited experience from halo & sw games). I like that there are two civilizations worth of weapons to choose from too. the human stuff looks...well...human. the covenant stuff is proper lasers 'n' shit that make the SW geek inside me bust a nut. (even though it's all the same with "plasma"/laser instead of bullets/rounds).

personally, I think comparing consolers to their pc counterparts is like playing in a sandbox and then complaining that it's not the beach. but whatever. I'm in the sandbox. I've seen many sandboxes. this one's well built but still obviously a sandbox. I don't have a problem with that.

one day though...one day, my friend, I will bite the bullet and learn to use that damn nostromo thing, and then maybe I'll enjoy something besides RTSs and flight sims on the comp.

watched bionic woman last night. thank god the guy who died is dead. most dull fecking character on tv. aight. off to setup some new boxes for a lan party this weekend. whoohoo! (starcraft and maybe AoE1/2).

Halo's saving grace for me was co-op. It sucked only half as much when there were two of us.

Its a feature I've been crying out for for ages; i mean its not like doom didn't have it. unfortunately, devs appear to have been like sheep and when Quake hit with its "ultimate" multiplayer mode (deathmatch), co-op was dropped.

however, i've always claimed, and still will that co-op is a superior form of multiplayer interaction and makes for a better game.

I think the choice of deathmatch only multiplayer, retrospectively, was a poor one and wished Quake had a killer Co-Op feature when it launched. It would then be second nature for developers, let's take crytek for example, to include the feature in their games. Crysis co-op would be masterful. I'm talking real co-op here, not shitty team death match, etc.

So honestly, saving grace for halo is multiplayer / co-op. Story was trash though, it was a zero on my horn-o-meter.

No sir, You're an idiot and a n00b if your discounting 10+ years of scifi games in one fell swoop , and imo flashing GO HERE, CLICK THIS PANEL arrows is a shitty gameplay/design choice. Glad you could turn that lame shit off in bioshock. I can give you a long list of shitty scifi games where there's no indication of what a reactor core override panel looks like or where it would be ;)

gears of war (which is ACTUALLY supposed to be the best 360 fps?)

erm... I doubt that for one obvious reason; GoW is not a first person shooter. Its a third person squad based shooter.

imo overrated vastly too; download it or if you've not bothered to sort your xbox out:
viewtopic.php?p=26794#26794
Its a bit better on the PC, but not something I thought was particularly special.

I think your sandbox analogy is a bit off;

Pc gaming is like playing in a sandbox with a deep end, lots of toys and lots of cutting edge sandcastle designs.

Console gaming is like a sandbox in a glass case that someone has shat in. When you try and look out at the pc sandbox, all you can see is your own shit.

I am in an endless persuit of gaming perfection, so the idea of choosing second best is hard for me to understand. plus you smell of poo. :wacky:

i've always preferred co-op multiplayer to one man army deathmatches, that's why i still play bf2 online with a couple of friends, we make our squad and work together as a squad like your supposed to, not like most idiots do and go it alone, one of the major problems with online fps these days is people do nothing but bunny hop, dolphin dive, or constantly throw a never ending stream of grenades, there's no skill in any of that and it does nothing but piss all the decent players off.

Bunny hoppers etc are 9 times out of 10 always gay arse fag teens who think they have "l33t skillz"

ewkay...when it comes to the "real" weapons available in CoD and the "sci-fi" weapon in halo and battlefront, there is no significant difference. the human weapons in halo actually look similar to their real world analogues. the alien stuff not as much, but it takes like two seconds to load the gun and fire a round or test the scope. mmkay?

regarding Gears of War, does that mean it's gonna play like full spectrum warrior? I hated that shite. if so, I think it's CoD3 for me. :wacky:

no dinky i was infact meaning what "alien/scifi" weapon is better against what enemies and what ranges, like for instance, it's universally known a shotgun is a close quarters weapon, not a long range weapon, it's universally known a sniper rifle is for long range, not really for rapid close quarters combat.

When you get a frag cannon... what's that? anti vehicle? close quarters? etc, like for instance the flak cannon on unreal tournament, the name suggests anti air/vehicle, in reality, close quarters shotgun equivalent. Same goes for scifi rts games.

Age of empires, we all know pikemen are best against cavalry, long bowman are best against other infantry, organ guns are best against infantry then buildings, mortars are best against buildings then infantry/cavalry etc. When you throw scifi units into the mix.... hmmm a cyborg power beefer what does that do? best against cows?, reality all the way for me

meh. I think the alien units are pretty obvious too. only speaking for halo here (again), which was what apparently only I thought we were talking about.

smallville was ok. it felt like they took a 5 ep story arc and pressed it into one. on the plus side, it meant less 90210 shite. on the down side...well...even more broad strokes than usual.

   nee... it's a transmogrification device as was clearly shown in Red Dwarf. Use it against your opponents and they will happily go moo till you start feeling peckish... then wash it down with a lager  BTW, was there ever a game made out of Red Dwarf series (that'd be neat IMO) and did anyone try The Simpsons game??

That's my point, lead shooters feel and look better than laser guns. In halo there's a wealth of really shitty weapons I wouldn't and didn't touch cos they sucked.

I think Max understands a bit better; i find the laser guns pretty lame and don't feel or work as satisfyingly as either real world, or similar to. They always come out incredibly, incredibly unbalanced. HL2 weapons work because they are mostly similar to lead shooters. What i always find in scifi shooters is I will never, ever use the alien style laser guns. Its pretty universal. Its only when your forced to that i use them.

Its not just weapons, I find that level design suffers in scifi environments by and large, I find gameplay suffers (see crysis), and I find they just aren't as fun. It usually degenerates into corridoor shooting or some lame ass find the red panel shit; finding keys went out of fashion with doom people.

The real winners in the scifi world are the ones that play as close as they can to real world level design, real world weaponry and rela world characters. One of the many reason HL2, beyond utter domination in gameplay and design, is better than any of the halos.

case and point; the end of Half-Life 1 is utter shit when your on zen or whatever its called. Terrible level design and game play.

But game's developers keep doing time and time again. Shame really; enough of the scifi shooter shit please. If your doing scifi, lets make it lead shooters, great level design and mix up the gameplay a little... its getting old.

No, it plays like a third person shooter not a pseudo-strategy game.

The Simpsons game

Which one, the new one? Hit and run? One of those ones on the nes? The one of the gameboy?

I played a few of them.

oh dear i think i just OD'd on mario galaxy.

I have no idea wtf is going on, you walk all over the shop and your running, jumping, and shooting all at the same time. I'm going to have to lay down for a little while and see if i can come up with a stratagem in which i don't ride my manta ray off a friggin water chute, fall off my ball or keep getting buggered by a star shaped hole in the moving floor.

Honestly, I don't know :wacky: I didn't even know there are many of them. It's the ps3 one that was reviewed on trusted reviews (http://www.trustedreviews.com/gaming/re ... ns-Game/p1) tho there's all sorts of platforms listed there for this game and I don't think they could be the same :? Anyway, I feel like playing some less violent game for a change that wouldn't suck or be terribly uninteresting like many RPGs (fetch this fetch that). Possibly loaded with humour and variety. Any suggestions?

Watching first season of "The Brittas Empire" (the one w/ Chris Barrie). Iunno. It's not that bad and it's getting funnier with every ep. It survived for 7 seasons so there must be a proper reason for it (since it's not an American series).

Weeds is freckin good imo. Can't believe you haven't watched it yet. It becomes way more offensive to some and that's only another reason for me to love it. It's prolly the only new show after Life on Mars that has genuine balls. I wouldn't wanna spoil it for you, suffice it to say Mary Luise Parker rolls her own ;)

I usually trust HBO shows enough to watch them first run. but showtime shows (dexter, brotherhood, weeds) I tend to wait and see if they hold their own before I get going. I was bummed that dead like me got dropped w/o a proper ending. the only exceptions are sci-fi and history stuff (if it looks interesting - never bothered with jeremiah even though I think JMS was in on it). but I've had to rethink that strategy too. it seems like the only shows that air at all are on hbo and showtime, so I don't have the luxury of waiting to see these days. the fodder on the rest of tv is relatively light in comparison. and butchered by commercials and the fcc censoring
