Just watched a new TV show from Kevin Smith called "Reaper" - it is pretty funny and could be a very cool show.... has a buffy style to it.. as in all demons and stuff with lots of comedy.

I was quite impressed... check it out.

Watched "Notes on a Scandal" and "In My Father's Den". The latter (Kiwi movie with Miranda Otto) was way better IMO. I don't even get the point of the first one... so this shallow teacher woman person (Cate Blanchett) had an affair with a bit mentally challenged athletic and adolescent school boy and then this self glorifying, self righteous old and ugly vampire/witch type woman person (Judi Dench) makes it all public and betrays a friendship she had with the first woman person only cuz she used that "situation" to her advantage in the first place... blah, blah,... so f0kin' wh00t? It's written nicely and that's about it. Book by Zoe Heller should be way better but I doubt I'll ever read it, in the end it's just another "who does who" soap type shit, and I leave such waste of time to those that don't feel spending at least two hours daily behind a mirror is excessive. Performance is quite average for names mentioned... WTF did critics see in this movie beats my shit! Kiwi one was actually quite good. A bit slow but is an excellent representative of character build-up. Performances are better than what I expected (lots of to me unfamiliar names) even though I read some favorable reviews beforehand. Anyway, it's a drama/mystery and where in hell did IMDB come with "thriller" is beyond my reasoning :wacky: There are absolutely no thrills in it at all. No bangs, no chills, no eerie moments. Nothing of the sort. Nevertheless, this movie makes perfect sense in the end and that's what I expect when I sit through the 2 hours plus movie... It passed the time nicely and left me thinking. The only thing on my mind after seeing "Notes on a Scandal" was where the f00k are aspirins and it made no sense at all. So people are shallow? What news! :outsider:

I see a considerably smaller left shift key, and it looks like they moved the backslash key. he said something about the US layout being terrible though (on that particular IBM notebook), and I find that's always the problem when I buy laptops (cuz I'm cheap and only look at price & specs then later realize how crap the placement of the touch pad is or how inconvenient the layout or batter life is). but I don't see any major difference between the two that he swapped out. :?

you ever program dinky? In fact, if you touch type its earth and water. Its all the punctuation that's moved and worst of all, the physical hardware is "wrong" on the us native (most other keyboards have the uk style with the large enter key and the \ on the opposite little finger to the forward slash).... makes things very odd and very slow if your used to the other.

Look here to see all the world's keyboard layouts:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_l ... rd_layouts

Your backslash is horribly placed imo, the @ symbol is in the wrong place and replaces the incredibly common " key... that's horrendous, and the worst crime is that the two different types of quotations on the same key on the us layout (very important for strings)... yuck. This makes coding much slower if your used to one or the other, relearning major shifts in keys that give no benefit would be an annoyance. Sure you can learn it, but the us layout gives no benefits what so ever anyway.

The biggest problem is I'd have to relearn a keyboard layout and the uk one is more than adequate for me (and i kind of prefer it anyway). Euro sign has been tacked onto the dollar key btw, its an extended keyboard; uk has the alt gr, which gives us the ability for one key to be 3 different characters (alt-gr+4 = €, shift+4=$, 4=4). Neither the us or uk keyboards have dead keys, the us international does have some key-combos that are dead iirc (bloody quote mess key iirc).

Anyway, the main reason I hate the thing and can't use it is they've messed up all the punctuation, the ~ key is a big stretch and I use that all the time in cygwin and on remote terminals to our hpux boxes, and I'd loose a lot of time on a keyboard I don't like.

All that said, I touch type anyway so I'm not actually looking at the keys... its the bad left shift key, the poor backslash location and the smaller enter keys that are the big problems and switching region won't fix those for me as its hardware layout :( Those three are hella important for the command line (not so much backspace when in vi though :) )

There's an annoying south african that uses an american layout on an english keyboard at work and he's got an english keyboard but has bound the shitty US keys to it. I got sick of going in and changing his keyboard layout so I've told him he's not getting any help from me if he doesn't learn to type on a proper keyboard.

bastard.

laptop keyboards are easy as cake to switch out if you've got a good laptop brand; the lenovos especially since they have great build quality and the screws on the reverse are marked showing you what the screws you need to undo are for each component (ie. screen, keyboard, hdd, wrist panel)

vista 32bit

no actually, its vista 64bit, but its a bug in both (google vista stop code 3gb). Just had to pull out a stick of ram, install, update and put in the stick of ram and its been fine.

In fact, I have vista on my notebook and its been rock solid (and i don't mean a brick ) and since patching up vista x64 on my desktop its been perfect too. No bsods, no lockups, no slow response nothing.

Of course, I do kind of know how to tweak computers by now (I have a friggin bat file that installs software and lays out the directory structure of my drives for pete's sake  )

Just turn off the user nag option and its great (plus you get windows+tab which is a feature nix has had for ages that makes tabbing between the millions of windows i have much easier).

I just installed bioshock and played a little bit. Full resolution, max settings for everything, dx10... no slow down at all.

I watched death proof and planet terror. Death Proof I very much enjoyed; it wasn't tarrantinos best by any stretch and I felt there were pacing problems and it was a bit heavy on the idle chatter but it was enjoyable. Was a bit up on the cheesey girl power stuff for the most part, and frankly I was routing for Kurt Russel the whole time
Spoiler:
What a shame about the ending for the Russel Rooters! Maybe he's still alive he just has a crushed face? :wacky:

Planet Terror banged everything up a notch... it was so freakin awesome and silly. Easily 1upped Death Proof without breaking a sweat; the violence was excellent, the gore was over the top, the acting was spot on, the style and plot execution... great. The bit where it 'missing reels' on you was brave and brilliant... really sparks your imagination and could contain the best footage of the film... except its missing  Top stuff. The ickle bike is a classic too :)

Both movies had brilliant casts, but Planet Terror took the biscuit here too.

Top stuff, watch it if you've not seen it!

yeah. the tilda (~) and backslash (\) are poorly located. especially the backslash, since it's so common. I actually learned to key on boards with a much larger enter key. although I've never missed the smaller key on full sized keyboards (certain laptops give me all kinds of trouble with shortened shift and enter keys though).

you can't really blame the guy for not wanting to relearn how to type on the UK layout, though. since you feel the same about the US. on the other hand, he IS working in the UK.

I still haven't bothered to learn the damn Nostromo thingy! not that I play many games on the comp to begin with. plus, I'm left-handed and use the mouse lefty whenever it's feasible just cuz it feels more comfortable (the right is perfectly capable of anything and far more proficient than any hand trying to use a touchpad)

What, you mean you don't know what the tilda and backslash key codes are? Look, it's so easy: Left Alt + Numpad 1 + Numpad 2 + Numpad 6 for ~ and Left Alt + Numpad 9 + Numpad 2 for \ :googley:

man as soon a kevin smith was not writing that reaper show bombed... ep 2 is terrible..

got the 2 eps of smallville... heh I still like this show even though you have to zap though 1/2 of it to make it watchable.. but the small and sweet superman moments are really cool.

And how is that new Kara? She is so power girl.. and not super girl (different versions) she even has the wrist band. The attitude .. everything .. but power girl would be just to cool for smallville so i bet she turns into gay super girl.....

Caught up on heroes.... looks good... I am glad they are getting right into it again... it would be a shame to have to go back to them nvr using there powers after all of season 1. Should just dump all the other toons and just do a show about hiroe.

I can't tell if you're kidding or not. I find it to be a very foreign experience. but then...so is any keyboard and mouse setup outside of rts's like aoe or starcraft. directly related to how much I do/don't play the game, I realize.

JMX? That's Java Management Extensions, right? I never was into Java thing cuz I never saw any benefits for it except on an enterprise level where you want to minimize development & deployment costs as much as possible with its multi-platform capabilities. Actually, I don't like any code that gets additional interpretation on run time... it just never was an exact science IMO. Sure basic math, arrays, classes,... get interpreted much the same and with similar performance penalty on various interpreters/platforms and that's all good in enterprise world where you can control what JITs and libraries are used on clients but in a real world I don't think it'll ever work as well as Sun hoped it would back when it first released Java. It's just that different OSes and JITs (or whatever compiler types are used, there surely must be some that ain't JIT at all :?) vary so much in the way they create objects (especially visual ones) and/or what they're allowed to do... it's just that I don't think you gain much using Java, .net, whatever,... cuz in the end you only can control so much and are dependent on third-party code/libraries that might or might not work in a given circumstance. Or even worse, cross-platform libraries limit you so much you can only write code that will execute on all platforms that it supports and can't create compiler time exceptions at all. Do I make any sense at all? It's been long time since I wrote anything in Java and I leave a possibility something great happened to it since. Doubt it though :wacky: OK, 'nuff of this bean grinding... For the time being, I'll prolly stick to Delphi/Kylix CLX for projects I need cross-platform (Win + Unix/Linux) support and extra thin clients (like DHTML/XML/DOM/... with JS... and I'm not talking AJAX here, there are other - IMO better - ways to do C/S thing with thin clients only) with custom server side SW or CGIs for various web servers for projects that don't need thick clients at all. And with your joyous response to what training course you've gotten yourself into... one has to feel for you man. Beans anyone?
