R5 can mean "DVDR5" (especially if you wanna hide your shitty source) or "Region 5," which I think is slang for Russian knockoff:

wikipedia wrote:R5 refers to a specific format of DVD released in the former Soviet Union, which is in DVD Region 5, and bootlegged copies of these releases that are distributed on the Internet. In an effort to compete with movie piracy, the movie industry chose to create a new format for DVD releases that could be produced more quickly and less expensively than traditional DVD releases. R5 releases differ from normal releases in that they are usually a direct Telecine transfer of the film without any of the image processing common on DVD releases, and without any special features. This allows the film to be released for sale at the same time that DVD Screeners are released. Since DVD Screeners are the chief source of high-quality pre-DVD release pirated movies, this allows the movie studios to beat the pirates to market. In some cases, R5 DVDs may be released without an English audio track, requiring pirates to use the direct line audio from the film's theatrical release. In this case, the pirated release would be tagged with ".LiNE" to distinguish it from a release with a DVD audio track.

The image quality of an R5 release is generally comparable to a DVD Screener release, except without the added scrolling text and black and white scenes that serve to distinguish screeners from commercial DVD releases. The quality is better than Telecine transfers produced by movie pirates because the transfer is performed using professional-grade film scanning equipment.

Because there is no scene release standard for pirated R5 releases, they were sometimes tagged as Telecines, DVD Screeners, or even DVD rips. In late 2006, several release groups such as DREAMLiGHT, mVs, and PUKKA began tagging R5 releases with ".R5" or ".R5.LiNE" (the line meaning it has direct English line audio) and suggesting that other groups do the same. Yet many groups still fight over these releases and there has been no officially adopted standard for releasing them.

edit: boondock saint, latest eps of john from cinncinnati and entourage. all were good. boondock was actually a first time viewing, believe it or not. I was unimpressed. I can see why/how it has attained a cult status, but that status is more image than substance. I mean, the idea of the movie is far more intriguing than the actual narrative. and the final court scene and interviews are a bit much. it could've been a lot better if they showed more stuff (or didn't show wilhem dafoe prancing around in the midst of one of the battles). still, there are some nice moments...mostly nice shots rather than moments. the PotC sequels, the zorro sequel and gladiator all produced similar feelings in that there is action, and the scenes in themselves are good visually, but they're too short-lived or feel "empty" somehow. like they're wasted opportunities for something great or truly epic (and here I also think of 300 huffing and puffing and constantly having to remind its audience that this scene is "epic" rather than feeling it as a theater goer).

blades of Glory was pretty good, some funny one liners (mostly from ferrell) and in general it was just good, i'd recommend it.

Like most of ferrells movies are funny in an insanely wacky kind of way

My reaction too, i find those american 'comedies' pretty f*ckin terrible at best.

I'm in no rush to see Blades of Glory.

I've been watching Dexter which is quite entertaining, and holding my interest but i have this deep nagging feeling that's its going to "explode" into bouts of pure american drama show and at that time i'll be forced to turn it off.

I wouldn't say that. I like many american comedies. and I think will farrell is funny. I don't think watching will farrell be will farrell for 90-100 minutes is remotely fun or funny. it's tedious. elf was tolerable. anchorman was so boring, not even steve carrell and kelly bundy could make me finish watching it. I had the good sense not to try to watch talledaga nights. kicking and screaming was bad (news bears!).

he's much better as a supporting character like wedding crashers or old school.

I think dexter's pretty unique on the american tv market. even when it sounds the trumpets and raises the banners high, he still cuts it off at the knees with lines like "not that I really give a shit about that. I just like the blood" or something. we are, after all, the idiots responsible for michael bay. but it could be worse. we could be german bolls of uwe.

i liked anchorman, but then we all know my feelings on kelly bundy

Babylon 5: The Lost Tales: Voices in the Dark (2007). That's an awfully layered title, isn't it? It's really two loosely connected stories, each with its own title, so the marathon titling gets even longer on the disc menu. Anyway, they're both good episodes. And that's exactly what they are: episodes. The first one isn't particularly original. It's an exorcist-ish thing that takes place of B5. Considering the stock material, I thought it was pretty good. Certainly one of the better standalone eps. The second ep is more original and more difficult to explain without revealing spoilers, but it's a better ep. The disc is a good B5 fix, but it's not even trying to aim as high as some of the other one shot movies. I liked them. Both eps are written and directed by JMS. That's a bit of a change. He usually gives the B5 stuff to someone else to direct. I think writer/producers should direct all of their material. Their intimate knowledge and decisive plan for their own scripts shines through, whether its buffy, angel, firefly, b5, entourage or others (except anything by kevin smith - he shouldn't direct anything). anyway, I guess joss and jms were the only ones I had in mind. heh.

there's a bit of posturing from sherridan's character that I'm never really comfortable with. it's like he wants to sound the ole trumpet and waive the banners himself (thinking of it from earlier). OH! And there's also a surprise preview on the disc: interviews with bruce tim and, I think, paul dini about a direct to video superman animated feature: superman: doomsday. for the uninitiated, that's the "death of superman" arc - the subject of the script originally worked-up for a live action movie by the aforementioned kevin smith.

i dunno, we only let him make one tv movie and it was his first directorial feat... it was the american studios fault for picking him up and putting him on a pedestal. it wasn't like any uk company funded his raping and plundering...

It was probably a case of mistaken identity and they didn't realise it was Paul W. S. Anderson and not Paul T. Anderson (american comedy crap), or even more likely Wes Anderson (good american comedy) :o

new series with david duchovny and a buncha naked ladies called californication. bits of it are quite good. it's borrowing a lot from entourage, but there's a pervasive tragic tinge to it that's nowhere to be found in entourage.

anyway, my fav scene is where he's in bed with this girl who's young, hot and your basic ideal fuck puppet. she roles off him, gets on her hands and knees and says "violate me." his cell rings. he says he'll "be right there," gets up and leaves the room. as this happens, she says "you're leaving? you're an asshole!" and as he's walking through the doorway, "consider yourself violated." classic!

fell asleep with wedding crashers for background noise. not sure if tha belongs here.

Okay, i watched the Richard Donner cut of Superman 2 and it was much better than the original. Fills some of the plot holes and what not, but then because its been reconstructed from scenes, its not best takes so much as only takes in places I reckons.... why didn't they make this one in the first place? Very odd.

I also watched Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and i have to ask, is he autistic/we seeing things from an autistic point of view? Is that what that is?
