what i was saying is the way the US holds back release dates on all their movies, so Hot Fuzz is playing at that game too

anyway just watched smallville and i agree, it was such shitty episode, even the bit where
Spoiler:
Lana finds out about Clarks powers
, which is something i've been waiting for for 6 seasons was fucked up bigstyle into a huge steaming turd

Actually, they don't think it will play well in the US for hot fuzz. The number of times I've heard silly comments like "I don't understand british accents" (I don't understand this myself, but maybe its something to do with very different accents from town to town in the uk), etc. just re-enforces the kind of bizarre studio decisions. They have strong english accents, in fact its a butt of one of the jokes, where Angel (Simon Pegg) can't understand the old english policeman, whilst the other policemen can, and then he has to take an interpretter for an interpretter when this other old man is speaking

I think they just don't know how to sell good movies anymore in the states.

or they know too much. if you think long, you think wrong. over analyze and itemize everything. it's endemic.

we make fun of english accents not making sense too, but it's the same as you describe in the movie (usually it's a pseudo cockney that we use; we do the same with "urban" or "rap" speech in movies too). iunno. it's retarded. I can somewhat understand staggering world wide releases that begin in the US cuz you can use re-use the reels (although so many movies get re-edited anyway), but that excuse doesn't really go in reverse cuz there's more theaters here. you have to cut more copies anyway.

concidering most of the movies that come out of america these days are proof that no matter how much you try and polish a turd it is still a turd, i think i can see why they wouldn't bother trying to market any english movies over there

If americans saw the title "hot fuzz" outside a cinema they would most likely go in expecting some porno movie "hot fuzz? dang hank that sounds like some a that there porno video"

Good point. Perhaps what's also relevant is the initial number of reels that make it to the States. One would expect they distribute originals evenly east to west, so they can speed the copying process :? Don't know though, might be bollocks :?

Watched "The Weight of Water" and honestly don't know what to make of it. I think it lacks twists. I like Dylan Thomas' work so references to his "And Death shall have no Dominion" poem were nice addition IMO. At least it gives it greater justice than that lame Hollywood reincarnation of "Solaris" ;)

stranger than fiction</i>. I was impressed with all of the actors. the only performance that was mailed-in was dustin hoffman, and he wasn't bad so much as just reprising the same shlock he did for I heart hucabees</i> and, ultimately, rain man</i>, but the latter is like accusing jack of playing the same crazy guy each time (that's not the case; they're different crazy people). anyway...good movie. will farrell actually shocked me with his restraint in the role. the ending didn't really bother me, and to be fair, the whole movie is something of a meditation on the difficulty of endings, but as the movie itself suggests, I think the movie/book would have been more powerful had it not been revised to please the proverbial plebs. ok. that's enough alliteration for me tonight.

if you've not noticed there's been ongoing db errors for about 2 weeks now, i've asked our host to move us to another server. There's too many sites on this box.

Anyway, not thought overly on the reuse of reels. That kind of makes a bit of sense. However, its more likely they are busy recutting the movie to put in more fart jokes for the american audience. Hot Fuzz: The Love Conquers All Edition

/me shudders.

I don't think they altered shaun of the dead, did they?

I know 28 days later and descent got recut. but I hope I watched shaun as it was supposed to be. cuz I loved the version I saw and bought. although the recut version of AoD (no idea why it was released outside america first) is vastly superior to the original (world wide) cut. even if raimi himself thinks it's disingenuous to the character, the s-mart ending is perfect.

Na, i was yanking your chain. Shaun they didn't touch, only got a limited showing though right?

it will probably be dubbed

How do the mpaa respond to graphic comic violence these days? There's no sex or nudity, but there's a lot of over the top CGI achieved gore in Hot Fuzz. Its the kind of stuff that the bbfc doesn't mind because its comical, like Braindead which they passed uncut. I think that would be the biggest worry for you as a yank :) There's swearing too, there's a lot of fucks and a cunts (there's a swear jar  ).

Usually american recuts are either less solid (The Shining), less graphically violent, cut for length, or its just dumbed down so people can understand what's going on. The M Night Shalalayalamanalana effect as it were. The fact that they had to rename philosopher to sorcerer for americans, for the fact that there was a perception that they didn't know what a philosopher was let alone a philosopher's stone, still cracks me up!

The case for Army of Darkness was simply Raimi didn't like the ending so changed it, director's sometimes use the time to tweak the film themselves because they weren't happy with their decisions. I don't mind that, its when the studio hires a stooge to do it. Night Watch for example is supposed to be ~30mins shorter than it is in russia, with a lot of characters that appear in the sequel cut out.

yeah. that's another reason to release here first (if you MUST stagger it): we have the tougher censors. shoot your film with them in mind and you don't have so many studio cuts to get that R or PG-13. wait, that's like saying design architectural models with play dough cuz yer gonna give it to your kid after it's finished anyway, right?

 i think the best description of the average intellect of an average american is summed up best in the episode of family guy called "Petarded"

Lois: what colour is a red fire truck?
peter: ooooh aaaahhhh ooooh i know this, oooooh give me a second, aaaaahhhh oooooohhh ooooooooh is it..... no, ooooooooooh wow erm oooooh

just about to watch this week's BSG.

had to come on here though and say how really really good the second to last ep of rome was. excellent stuff. There's this scene between Anthony and Verenus...you can see it coming but it was just a marvelous turn (it depends largely on all of their previous conversation for its impact). and the whole ep was great. that was just one moment. won't spoil. watch it. it's great. I'm afraid the final ep won't be able to live up to this one.

Slow day, huh? Anyway, watched "Hollywoodland" today and while it's an OK movie you won't miss much if you plan on skipping it ;) It passed the time that I still can't even believe I had spare  Not much else to say about it, really. Some second class actors playing top-notch colleges in a semi-transparent crime/drama wannabe History/Mystery/Thriller dunk, yada, yada,....

You might wanna first try FIXMBR if that's what's causing your problems. Boot from your XP install CD and then hit R or something to load recovery console... make sure you don't even connect other drives cuz I once lost my other drive data when trying to fix another, damn microbucks inc... There might also be other problems causing your drive to appear unformatted but normally unformat tools don't manage to retrieve any data unless you have stored partition(s) info of that drive... Anyway, I use PowerQuests (like PartitionMagic) tools for such shitty situations. What I'd do is try to find some tool that will stream-copy your drive in whatever state it is (like Acronis TrueImage if it's still capable with latter reincarnations to do such basic shit it did once) to your second drive (use compression so you won't end up with 80 gigs file), disconnect all good drives, load recovery console and then you can safely play with it any way you feel fit

Who knows, perhaps you'll end-up with the best Blade Runner cut ever  And if you downloaded any movies worth watching your drive wouldn't dare to die on you in the first place :P

the black donnellys. it's a cool premise and the atmosphere is excellent. that has kept me watching. but I feel disappointed by every ep aside from the premiere. if things don't pick up soon, imma leave it off the weekly watch list.
