can't say I get the bush reference.

I bought the new release of the original theatrical movies (with the special editions that come along with them - price was the same as any new release though). anyway, do not buy the dvds if your purpose in doing so is to get the original theatrical versions. they are absolute crap. I guess they're laserdisc transfers (as has already been mentioned), and they are letterboxed (matted onto a 4:3 image - not anamorphic) so you'll have to tweak your widescreen display to see them properly, and of course there's the measley 2ch audio (available in 3 different languages on the r1 discs). anyway, the video quality is really really bad - atrocious. that's not hyperbole. they're grainy as fuck. it looks like more black dots than actual images. I've watched SD TV rips that looked better.
I realize nothing here is exactly new, except I've finally seen it for myself, and even I notice the really really bad quality video (for your reference, I think autogk looks great). I have the cleaned-up versions of the original trilogy when they were re-released on vhs in the mid-90s. I'm saddened that they're full screen (they were christmast gifts), but their quality blows these "dvds" out of the water.
