pity. if s2 is anything like s1, I'd like to see more.

HBO announced at Wednesday's Television Critics Association summer press tour that the 10-episode second season of Rome, premiering in January 2007, will likely be its last. Chairman and CEO Chris Albrecht explains, "It's an enormous undertaking to do a regular series 6,000 miles away in a foreign country." (As if Vancouver can't pass for Italy.)

it looks like HBO is cutting budgets. they're famous for giving royal treatment to tv dramas, but there seems to be a nervous trend of dumping expensive projects (carnivale, deadwood, rome). and these genre shows are being replaced with standard fodder like big love, sopranos, the wire, sex & the city, curb your enthusiasm, entourage. well...that's what I see happening anyway.

Not really scifi or fantasy, but yeah its a shame. Although to be honest, I'd can this money eating series and Dead wood and bring back carnivale! (which is fantasy :) )

I doubt they'll be able to keep rome up for more than a series more or so anyway :(

Deadwood has also been canned. This season is going to be the last.

 I saw that one coming.

HBO is just getting too big. the success of their original programming the last decade has made them so popular that they're starting to play like hollywood studios. only sticking with standard, universal fare. iunno. that's the trend I'm fearing. they're still churning out some great shows. but honestly, no matter how good the wire is, hasn't the same basic show been on tv since the 70s? and now their big, shocking replacement for carnivale is a fucking full house with a polygamist instead of uncle jessie and...that other guy. and say what you will about deadwood; it's unique. oz was shocking and unique. now FOX is churning out more cutting edge shit. :(

I love entourage, but I fully accept that it's basically a male version of sex in the city. sex in the city, you remember, that chick dramedy from the masterminds behind beverly hills 90210?

/sigh
