watched Mothman Prophecies, just to check if the claim can be made that it is a scifi film as well as a thriller... it most definitely can be classified as a scifi movie if you try, there's a lot about precognition, ufos (lights in the sky, electrical failure, static voices, etc.), and you can see why people also say its a horror. The camera work, soundtrack and techniques are all suggestive of a horror, in several establishing shots you can see the camera work suggests that someone/something is watching in, like when the mothmen are first suggested, the camera is up behind a grate watching the characters. The soundtrack is purposely eerie.

So I think there's very obvious reasons scifi is listed as a subgenre, and why no one in their right mind would really put it in the "thriller" section of a movie store, even if thats the primary genre, its too scifiy/horrory... it would be like putting something like donnie darko in the thriller section which is silly.

thriller pretty much is horror in US stores. I mean, there's a difference. but from one place to another, you could find everything horror under the thriller label (not usually vice versa - I think "thriller" is kind of considered a "tasteful" way of describing "horror" sometimes).

speaking of which, watched the first two eps of Point Pleasant</i>. some really nice looking chicks in that series. it's kinda like 90210 meets x-files mixed with the omen - but mostly 90210.

the acting is pretty terrible at times, but the hook is good: the devil's daughter (born of a virgin mother), is "unleashed" on the town, but like Jesus, she has to choose. but in this case, daddy wants her to choose armageddon as opposed to benevolence/salvation. come to think of it, it's more like 90210 meets Carrie with a tinge of the Omen.

just watched Toy Soldiers (1991)

quite enjoyed it, especially when wil "im a knobheaded "actor" in its loosest sense" wheaton gets shot many times in it, sean astin was good in it, and the story was pretty good too, although everytime lou gossett jr was onscreen i couldnt shake the feeling he reminded me of a cross between wcw turned wwf/wwe wrestler Perry Saturn (harking back to my old school wwf attitude days there ) and my mate alan's dad :wacky:

yes.

just got back from Silent Hill</i>. iunno. I don't like straight horror/thriller (there to scare) movies to begin with. I always need some sort of hook, like alien</i> is sci-fi. or ED(2) is funny. I hesitate to even consider romero movies horror, but I suppose I should, and lump them in there with their allegorical politics and whatnot. anyway, my point is that I can and will (if challenged) sit through anything from raise your voice</i> to sponge bob</i> to Freddy 5,000</i>, but I don't like to. so why I decided to give silent hill</i> the time of day, I don't know. actually, I do know. I've already seen the new jennifer aniston movie and V for Vendetta</i> and ice age 2</i>. so my choices were the wild</i>, benchwarmers</i>, silent hill</i>, thank you for smoking</i>. not in the mood for a (psuedo-docu) and think wild and benchwarmers look like the most insepid crap. so that's how they got me into the theater (plus free popcorn).

iunno what the game is like, nor do I care. it starts out like your basic scary movie. and then somewhere along the line - maybe 2/3rds of the way in, turns into a weird version of the crucible</i> meets warlock</i>. I say all of this cuz, while you would expect me to be glad it wasn't just another demons-from-hell scary movie, it really kind of loses its way there.

I've read complaints about the guy/father being in the movie (sean bean). he was fine and the character made sense. but the shit he gets mixed-up in really doesn't go anywhere or mean anything. umm...I suppose I like the idea of the way the movie ends, but it's not very satisfying. visuals were fine, I guess. didn't bother me. but there's this one scene that pretty much sums up the whole movie: the mother has crashed into this hell(ish) dimension where it went from raining to raining ash. and she looks around puzzled like and the camera circles her and it's all good. some ash lands on her face and she wipes it up with a finger, then crushes it between her thumb and finger. it falls apart and leaves a dark gray/black stain on her skin. great. but then she says the most impossibly redundant thing: "ash." like anyone in the audience is that fucking dumb not to figure it out without having a character on the screen say what it is purely for the benefit of the audience.

having played silent hill 1 and 2 and partially played 4 i would say from your description that it seems to suit the games fine, the idea behind the games (even though im not a big fan of them) is theres a town called silent hill that is some sort of crossover portal to a hellish dimension and ordinary folk visiting get sucked there and back and there again etc etc, its beena while since i played so i cant give that much clarity but it seems from what you say teh film is like the game
