the island</i> is about as good a movie as michael bay has ever made, although I do cop to loving the first bad boys and being mildly entertained by the second. c'mmon, how can you not like stuff like this:
-What is this having-a-picnic shit in my car?

-Please, man, I'm not getting my sex at home. Don't deny me this.

-You sleep with a beautiful woman every night.

-I'm married. That's what married means. It means you sleep together, but you can't get none.

-Watch it with all that shit, all right?

-Look, where's your cup holders?

- I don't have one.

- You don't have one? $$$$$ for this car, and you ain't got no cup holder?

-It's $$$$$. This is one of the fastest production cars on the planet. Zero to sixty in four seconds, sweetie. This is a limited edition.

-You damn right it's limited. No cup holder, no backseat. It's a shiny dick with two chairs in it. I guess we the balls just dragging the fuck along.

Downfall. A really brilliant movie, and the acting is superb (although one of the generals was a regular on lexx so that kind of spoilt the 'realism'). Really is a good movie.

Its a really great movie set at the downfall of the third reich if you've not seen it, (and remember its a movie these people all did terrible things,) but the movie is well made, superbly acted and a really good piece about things spiraling out of control:

bluester wrote:All the bad reviews I read (the IMDB rating is extremely high) are based on ideological ground and the fact that the movie is supposed to be too much sympathetic to Hitler and showing his human side. Nothing I read in the bad critics had to do with the directing, acting and moviemaking itself rather then the subject itself. That can be always be open to debate, but frankly doesn't have much to do with the whole thing. I could have predicted such responses from certain movie critics

A. O. Scott (The New York Times):
The most disturbing aspect of "Downfall" - and the reason it has been attacked in Germany - is the way it allows the audience's sympathy to gravitate toward some of these characters. Next to the Goebbelses, and to Hitler, many of the others don't look too bad. In part, this is a result of the conventions of film narrative, which more often than not invite us to identify with someone on screen, even if nobody is especially admirable.

Schroeger (Filmcritic.com)
Yet in making a film so rigorously focused on their destruction, the filmmakers invariably wind up romanticizing, to varying degrees, people and events that should not, and cannot, be successfully portrayed as sympathetic. Junge does a significant amount of hand-wringing over whether to stay with her beloved Fuhrer and a humanitarian SS doctor (perhaps the film’s most egregiously misleading character) attempts to save the city’s elderly civilians, while military commanders, convinced that Hitler has lost his marbles but committed to their world-conquering cause, weep and get drunk under the strain of remaining loyal to their lunatic leader.

Unwilling to fully subscribe to a cold, detached view of these proceedings, the director instead sets scenes of paranoia, suicide and supposed courageousness by Hitler’s foot soldiers to mournful music, while discreetly turning his camera away from Hitler and Goebbels as self-inflicted bullets end their miserable lives. The effect is one of misplaced empathy. Everyone in that bunker, from the demonic Goebbels to the willfully blind (yet nonetheless complicit) Junge – who escapes from the bunker and enjoys a lyrical bike ride to safety at film’s conclusion – deserves no less than utter contempt, and to soften them up by portraying them as compassionate, frail or feeble is in some sense to mitigate their villainy. Hitler may have loved his dog Blondi, Speer may have disobeyed orders during the Reich’s dying months, and Junge may have shown kindness in making the Goebbels kids their final meal, but Downfall’s concentration on such trivialities is gravely misguided, and ultimately winds up partially glossing over each and every Nazi’s damning culpability in a global atrocity.

I rest my case :wacky:

"those faggot american sandwiches" :wacky:

Seriously though its a sandwich, we really aren't as fascinated in coming up with quaint names for things that already have a name, although we have subways and i'm sure they've branded the sandwich, "subs" in there :)

I've never referred to one as a sub anyway. We have the same sandwiches though, but we haven't branded them what they look like.

There's some nice little colloquialisms for sandwiches in different places:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandwich
Some of it doesn't seem to be quite as applicable as they make out.

yeah subways do call them subs (my sister loves goin in but i refuse to go in one on principal), although isn't an american sub the equivalent to a baguette only with softer non crusted bread?

and is it just me (bad use of grammar there by me, starting a sentence with "and") but doesn't a hoogie sound like something you would cough up rather then eat? kinda like a loogie but more competitive

the bread looks baguettish but it varies a lot in terms of what it's actually made of and actually looks like.

sandwich here is sliced bread. so how do you distinguish between a sub sized sandwich and two slices of bread with something between it?
