IMDb

In his quest for fame and success, Ismail, a driver for a newspaper company, tries to take some unauthorized photographs of the inside of a German rocket undergoing a technical test. He accidentally launches the rocket into space, taking with him Dr Sharvin, the German scientist who built the rocket, and Ahmad Rushdi, an Egyptian meteorologist. When their rocket somehow manages to land upon the moon, the three hapless space travelers meet Dr Cosmo and learn of the intelligent life that once inhabited the moon but which was all but annihilated by a nuclear war. After Rushdi falls in love with one of the moon girls, they all decide to return to earth but lack enough fuel for the trip and so have to venture to the foreboding far side of the moon to obtain some 'atomic petrol.' Will the crew ever return to the earth?

Loosely inspired by the 1953 American feature 'Abbott and Costello Go to Mars,' this 1959 comedic romp from Egyptian actor Ismail Yassin features several nods to Lou Costello's trademark mannerisms. However, the story is considerably different, and there's an oddly dramatic turn toward the end when our crew meets some miserably disfigured nuclear war survivors in a cave on the far side of the moon. Even so, there's lots of goofy fun to be had. Ismail gets drunk on some whiskey that happens to be on the rocket, while ladies man Rushdi teaches a scantily clad moon girl how to smoke a cigarette. Features a spacey belly dance routine and an appearance by 'Otto the Robot,' the latter able to hypnotize humans but who also enjoys some of Ismail's whiskey. Many of the rocket shots seem lifted from another film, but there's some hilarious scenes of the rocket flying by Cairo and whizzing over the pyramids.

Duration: 1h 30mn
Dimensions: 624x448
Framerate: 29.970 fps
Codec: XviD @ 1265 Kbps (BVOP)
Audio: MP3 @ 57 Kbps (Joint Stereo VBR)
Language: Arabic, with a little English and German
Subtitles: Arabic, English, French (VobSubs); English (SRT)
Note: The English translation seems fair, although the punctuation needed work (mostly the missing apostrophes). I fixed as much as I could in the conversion of the English subs to SRT, but the VobSubs are untouched so perhaps some one else can check over the French and make any corrections for an SRT, or touch up the VobSubs.

Online info is pretty sparse for this one, but there's a very short review in Italian here, which notes that despite being distributed in the English market in a subtitled edition DVD this film is 'inexplicably ignored by the most authoritative English-language filmographies.'
