Incorrectly billed by 20th Century Fox as a buffy the vampire like movie, this has very little to do with vampires, there just so happen to be Vampires in the mystical underworld of modern day russia in this fantasy movie.
The others are powerful sourcerers (although their abilities are on display much more in the sequel), that work for the forces of light or the forces of dark.
Just in case its not clear, this is hard subbed in English with a hefty ac3 track that is original russain.
The reason for the hardsubbing is best demonstrated here:
As can be seen, the subtitles interact with people and events on screen, so they melt or float across the screen, get obscured by objects in the foreground or follow a character as they exit.
Just adds a bit more to the movie than dull static / Hearing Impaired subs
