Watchmen - Tales of the Black Freighter & Under the Hood

Found at another board. If I understand it correctly, those are by-products of the Watchmen movie, that were edited out of the cinema release due to length issues, but might be included in a later Extended version. At least, that´s what the IMDB FAQ says:

In the fictional world depicted in the "Watchmen" comic book, superheroes are controversial public figures and therefore not standard comic book subject matter. Instead, other stories of heroism like pirates are popular. "Tales of the Black Freighter", therefore, is a comic-within-the-comic about the titular Freighter and its pirate crew.

In the "Watchmen" movie adaptation, "Tales of the Black Freighter" was to be presented in segments using stylised animation. However the complete film's run time would have extended beyond three hours, which the studio found unacceptable. Instead, "Tales of the Black Freighter" will appear on DVD, edited into a single movie, around "Watchmen"'s cinema release. A comprehensive, extended DVD of "Watchmen" will likely restore the animated segments to their original place.

Bloated corpses buoy a castaway’s life raft in TALES OF THE BLACK FREIGHTER, a grisly parable taken from the pages of Alan Moore’s WATCHMEN. One of the book’s most riveting detours, the comic-within-a-comic (read by one of the book’s characters) ominously paralleled the main events of the graphic novel. Although the beloved story was cut from Zach Snyder’s big-screen version of WATCHMEN, it’s recast here as a standalone animated program aimed at mollifying completists and ramping up interest in the adaptation. Paired with the macabre take on ROBINSON CRUSOE is another lopped-off limb from the comic: UNDER THE HOOD, a mix of live action and CGI that looks back at the salad days of Nite Owl and the Minutemen.
