Variety has confirmed a persistent rumor that TV actor Brandon Routh is director Bryan Singer's choice to play the title role in his upcoming Superman movie. A deal has not yet been signed, but the relative unknown is expected to take on the role in the comic-book movie, which heads to Australia next month to begin production, the trade paper reported.
Routh's credits include One Life to Live, Gilmore Girls, Will & Grace and Cold Case. He recently wrapped his first feature role in Deadly.
Routh, 25, was raised in Norwalk, Iowa, just 100 miles south of Woolstock, the hometown of TV's original Superman, George Reeves, the trade paper reported.

Cinescape Online reported a rumor that Angel alumni Amy Acker and Charisma Carpenter are both vying for the coveted role of Lois Lane in Bryan Singer's upcoming Superman movie. The site said that Acker (Fred/Illyria) got a callback for the part based on her chemistry with Brandon Routh, the soap actor who has been confirmed as the choice to play the Man of Steel. Carpenter (Cordelia) is also one of six supposed contenders for the role of the feisty journalist who becomes Clark Kent's true love. The others include The O.C.'s Mischa Barton, Mia Kirshner (FOX's 24), Lost's Evangeline Lilly, Star Wars' Natalie Portman and Felicity's Keri Russell.
