good cinema died by the end of the 70's... apart form like mabey 1 exception every year or 2. It is my strong hope that the cheapening of technology will soon allow indy film makers, film LOVERS to start bringing decent quality productions. and a rebirth of good cinema will happen.

Till then if you are looking for awesome scifi, or fims in general.. i would start looking backwards in time.

Quick list of sci-fi films that I've liked that haven't been mentioned yet. Put asterisks by some for those I really liked.

Avalon (2001) *
Code 46 (2003) *
Cypher (2002)
Happy Accidents (2000) *
Immortel (ad vitam) (2004)
One Point O (2004)
Pink 5 stuff :)
Possible Worlds (2000) **
Primer (2004) **
Teknolust (2002)
Gusha no bindume (2004) (The Bottled Fools) *

I think you'd really liked the Bottled Fools.

heh Primer was wacky but I liked it also ;) If you'd like to watch good & recent sci-fi than I second what Dinky has said. It's on telly. Try with "Life on Mars" that I think you'll really like ;) BSG is good also tho some eps are rather boring. I was totally happy with "Razor" but you'll have to watch at least some of the series to appreciate it fully IMO. Some other titles that I liked and also including mini series (I'll try to keep it to less commonly known titles):

5ive days to Midnight (mini series)
American Astronaut, The (wacky B&W sci-fi musical)
Banlieue 13 (French gangsta' dudes on speed)
Cube Zero (the best of "Cube")
Five People You Meet in Heaven, The (slow building fantasy)
G.O.R.A (wacky Turkish sci-fi spoof)
Incident at Loch Ness (Herzog's non-sci-fi non-alien abductees non-sense)
Invasion (series) (showed promise got canceled with stupid "ending")
Jacket, The (OK, this one is not that uncommon title in average Joe's DVD collection but it's good)
Jericho (series) (PA, starts off slow but gets much better)
Kovak Box, The (quite good sci-fi/mystery/thriller)
Lost Room, The (mini)
Lost Skeleton of Cadavra, The ("Dark Star" quality in a new B&W B-movie fav... it's a laugh)
One Point O (a strange bird but I liked it)
ReGenesis (series) (this is why you shouldn't skip chemistry & biology classes)

Not much of a list but I bet you haven't seen them all ;)

I'd only get Teknolust if you're a BIG Tilda Swinton fan, otherwise its garbage :). I think I like it only because of the dance the tri-colour Swinton's do in it.

The Pink 5 stuff is just some funny fan Star Wars movies with a valley girl as Pink 5. You should be able to download it easily.

Possible Worlds is my favourite out of the whole lot.

Out of MyK's list I really enjoyed American Astronaut (mainly because of the "Hey Boy!" song) and The Lost Room mini-series. A lot of the other things on the list I haven't seen, and I want to try the Kovak Box and Incident at Loch Ness myself.

I also just watched a scifi movie called "Man From Earth", which I was thought was fantastic. Another TV series I really enjoyed this year was "Day Break" with Taye Diggs in it. Its not heavily science fiction, but the core premise is. Oh, and I forgot about "The Wild Blue Yonder" with Brad Douriff in it. Strange film about an Andromedan (or something) talking about his experience of coming to Earth.

I wish they made more *good* science fiction. I mainly get my fix from short stories these days.

Yes Jynksy thats the one I'm talking about. I thought it was excellent too :). I think I only tried it because it had the guy who played Jayne in Firefly in it.
