What Motivates Us To Watch Sci-Fi?

I think a different perspective is what puts people off scifi? and why are people that are perceived as technical / more intelligent (geeks) apparantly more open to it?

I don't know what puts people of Sci-Fi, mabe it is that a Science fiction writer can write about just about anything were as other genres are quite limited in focus.
1984 and 2001 for example are completely different.

Personally, it's the 'gratuitous'!
Everything from special effects to tit's and ass. The thing is, in sci fi I can get as close to escapism and realistically possible, it can push my buttons and make me feel that littlle bit less comfortable.
Non sci fi like Sopranos on the other hand is too realistic, it's a soap opera with boobs and guns, there isn't much to surprise or make me think (it's still bloody great by the way - I'm a big fan).
Films like 12 Monkeys, Kin Dza Dza, LotR and American Astronaut - series like Aeon Flux, FLCL, LEXX, Babylon 5 and MPD-Psycho all push the boundaries and make life (for me anyway) that little bit richer.
