The American (2010)
well...I guess they were going for character study...or something. it was a more or less independent film. the performances in themselves weren't bad, but the story was non-existent. what is there is cookie-cutter stuff. the ending is anti-hollywood, but it's so typical/telegraphed that they might as well have gone hollywood and made some people in the theater happy by reaffirming their hope/desire that there is good in the world. yada yada. iunno. it's by no means terrible. but there's so much plot that's never explored/discovered...it's just shoddy/annoying. who is he? who is the other he? what, exactly do either of them do? who are they? what are the motivations of xyz? I suppose you could say it's minimalist and that's not the point of the movie, but then what do you have? an empty shell that's doing something that's been done a dozen times? you can strip CASINO ROYALE of it's gloss and pageantry, but it's just as deep as this. same tortured/lonely soul. same depth of character. no. more. and there's a fucking context for the events in the Bond movie!

take it or leave it. nothing special. not boring. a bit pretentious. nice tits.

cross post from FH...

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D (2010)
about the reviewer:
  • I don't play or give a shit about the games
  • I didn't see the first movie, but I did see the second movie and the third (Extinction) - they were perfectly watchable actioners
  • I'm not a fan - in general - of 3D movies. 99% of the time, they add absolutely nothing to the experience, and in the one exception (AVATAR), the 3D was the attraction rather than the movie itself (which, honestly, lacked a remotely original idea - it was ALL VISUAL)

The review:
This movie was terrible. it was laughably terrible. people were talking throughout the entire movie save the first 20 minutes (in which time they decided it was terrible and so decided to MST3k it). I'm not a P W. S. Anderson fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I do think he *is* - or can be - competent. This movie should not be used as evidence for such a claim. There is almost no discernible relationship between plot, dialogue, and camera/scene edits. At a few points, it seems like they're trying to make a video game come to life, so the main characters kinda get sucked into a maze/instance/scenerio. The bulk of the movie is a complete rip off of DAWN OF THE DEAD, but you'd probably have to have seen either the original or the zach snyder remake in order to know this or even to follow wtf was going on in the movie because of the aforementioned clusterfuck of plot, dialogue and editing. FYI: 3D does nothing for this movie. It's rarely used and never effectively so. It even lacked the usually reliable Real 3D demo clip.

My advice:
  • if you like the RE games, stay the fuck away. you will be insulted by this much worse than you were the first go around
  • if you were mildly entertained by the recent RE movies and expect more of the same, guess again. this is ridiculously inferrior - and I'm not saying the previous efforts were high art
  • if you enjoy 3D movies, go watch...anything else. the 3D is almost non-existent in this. I cannot believe it was actually filmed in 3D. That has to have been a mistake and I misread it. :?
  • Instead of watching this, watch Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD if you have an appreciation for "film", snyder's DAWN OF THE DEAD if you want action, 30 DAYS OF NIGHT if you want gore, or BLADE 2 if you want...the same baddie fx they use in this thing but with a remotely logical plot progression
  • or just stay the fuck away.

watched The Expendables last night, concidering Arnie and Bruce Willis were advertised as "starring" they were only in it for 5 minutes, there was a little too much aging men moments, particularly the bit with Mickey Rourke telling Sly his story, which just seemed out of place, but the action was excellent, and i enjoyed it as a hark back to the action movies of the 80s "the plot is shit and non existant but we have muscles and blow shit up big style"

that's the same version i have Anarchoid, i've not really read anything on it other then the prequel comic mini series, which was pretty good.

I've found reading stuff about movies (as in reviews etc) tends to make you go into the movie expecting certain aspects and so on, that may or may not be there, so i tend to not bother reading them anymore

Watched Predators, it was better then Alien Vs. Predator 1 and 2 (coz that's difficult), and better then Predator 2, not better then The original though, the first half an hour just made me think of lost... except lost would've been infinitely not shit if predators were in it
