Anti-games attorney disbarred in Florida

Saturday, September 27 2008, 09:48 BST

By Mark Langshaw
Jack Thompson, a former attorney infamous for his crusade against violence in games, has been permanently disbarred by the Florida Supreme Court.

The court cited Thompson's recurrent acts of public misconduct and recommendations from judge Dava Tunis, who presided over his misconduct suit in 2007.

In addition to disbarment for life, Thompson has been ordered to reimburse the Florida Bar fees of $43,675 (£21,837) with only a slim chance of a rehearing.

Thompson responded to the ruling by issuing a press release to gaming blog Kotaku, which stated that the disbarment was an act of revenge for him filing lawsuits against the Supreme Court.

"This disbarment is in retaliation," read the statement. "The timing of this disbarment transparently reveals its motivation: This past Friday Thompson filed a federal civil rights action against The Bar, the Supreme Court, and all seven of its Justices."

The court's ruling is effective as of October 25.

he's not an attorney if he's disbarred, he's just a douche. :wacky:

i presume by "misconduct" they mean printing and handing out pictures of hardcore gay porn that have nothing to do with the case

tried to post this on FH but it went down by the time I finished. :wacky:

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
the movie is ok, nothing special. Fun action-adventure film with silly plot and ridiculous action scenes. I put my brains in neutral and it was fun. Most of all I enjoyed Karen Allen: she's a wonderful actress, a sweet woman and it seems she really enjoy being there.

6/10 Silly, yet fun movie.

My God, that film was pure shit. Patton Oswalt even has a routine on how bad it was.

you know, the scary thing is I rate it pretty much how DK did (5 or 6 depending on the day), but I'm also a solid 1.5-2 easier grader than DK.

case in point....

just got back from RIGHTEOUS KILL. You know, I don't see the bitching and moaning about DeNiro or Pacino. I just don't. hey, the movie was blah. it was passable (on a good day), and it's certainly no "end of cinema as we know it" disaster. having said that, who the f%(* wrote, directed, and edited this movie? and did any of them ever, at any one time, TALK to each other? fuck, man. forget about deniro. you have pacino. all you have to do is shut the hell up and roll film and he'll at least go on one of his patented rants. I mean, even the guys who made THE RECRUIT and DEVIL'S ADVOCATE knew that - and the latter cast keanu reeves in the lead! There are a lot - and I do mean A LOT - of quality actors absolutely swimming in mediocrity here. it's not just the big two from HEAT and GODFATHERS.

grading this is...well...I don't really grade them anyway, but just to see how it's been going: I'd give it a 4/10 today. I could see it being a 3 or a 5 on another day though.

watched MY BEST FRIEND'S GIRL yesterday too. umm...I can't believe I'm saying this, but Kate Hudson needs a boob job. no...really, I don't encourage that. it's just...yo. it's sad in both directions that my man boobs are bigger than hers. and she's given birth, hasn't she? then they basically flaunt her flatness in multiple scenes. She's in her 30s, isn't she? this isn't ALMOST FAMOUS. She's no spring chicken still "growing into her body" or whatnot. so that was kinda. meh. whatever. The movie is about as generic a blend of HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS and FAILURE TO LAUNCH as you could possibly get. Dane Cook works. everything he does certainly doesn't work, and there are a few 'scenes' where he's clearly just going off on one of standup routines. Alec Baldwin was pretty funny. Jason Biggs works, but he was used too much here, and every attempt on the movie's part of sincerity is completely wasted. I guess they were trying for the next WEDDING CRASHERS, but frankly, a standup comic an AMERICAN PIE superstar don't have the quirkiness of vaughn, the range of wilson, or the looks/charisma of McConaughey. and while alec baldwin is funny, it's a less funny impersonation of his shtick from 30 ROCK. so save your $10 and watch that.

overall: not worth watching but not a complete disaster (e.g., CATWOMAN, RAISE YOUR VOICE, anything by M. Night Shyamalan).
Life ducks, and you sigh.

I can not handel heroes.... somthign about it just anoys teh hell out of me.. it is so "serious". Shows like Angel could get away with the stupid stories as it was funny... but Heroes is like Smallville... you wait untill there is like 10 eps out downlaod them all then watch all 10 eps in 1 hour... HEAVY on the fast forward... What pisses me off is that it is one of the best shows around at the moment.. man that is depressing.

Anyone been watching Fringe? Way to early yet but i think there is a chance this show may turn out ot be good.

I think heroes is off to a good start this season, maybe too many stories and characters... they seriously need to kill someone and make them stay dead.

yeah i think it needs, as we have discussed before, either to kill some people off so there's more focus on a few people, or just focus each episode on only 1 or 2 characters

naw. I'm not going to defend Indy4. it started decent and got ridiculously bad. doesn't bother me though. I still expect more from speilberg, but he's never been a sure thing for me, and anything with Lucas is bound to be drivel. I said in the FH thread that I was more emotionally distraught about TROY and TRANSFORMERS than INDY4 even though the former 2 are both prolly better movies. expectations, I suppose.

funny you should mention HEROES and ANGEL in the same breath, Jynksy, cuz this week's ep of HEROES was very much like BUFFY/ANGEL. not the whole ep, just the bits with Sylar & Noah Bennett. And for about 2 minutes, it was fecking priceless television. everything involving claire is tosser material. the other arcs are somewhere inbetween.

i found the noah/sylar bit not really great, more.... amusing, mainly as i basically felt like i was watching loaded weapon 1 but with 2 white guys instead of emilio estevez and sam l jackson or police squad, i just couldn't take it seriously

also i'm glad that silly storyline involving future peter trapping present peter in the body of that criminal is over, it was just silly

yeah. it was played for laughs. and I laughed.

it wasn't really fitting with the rest of the series, but the rest of the series hasn't exactly been very good for a while. so I didn't have a problem with that at all.

no. but I'd be more than happy to sell you a shitload of anime.

actually, there's an awful lot of relatively good sci-fi on tv right now, this being the season for new shows to air.

terminator, heroes, fringe, supernatural...not sure about that time traveling thing max was watching with kevin mckidd. tru blood. and I'm pretty sure there are 2 or 3 more (at least) that I don't have the time or inclination to watch. prolly on FOX.

All I can say about TDK is that its release date is NOT listed in the items scheduled for December from WB/DC that goes out to comic book stores, but Iron Man has been listed for a couple months. so it's unlikely that TDK will hit before christmas. I find that kinda strange since a mid-december release would generate a helluva lot more sales than something in mid-winter or spring.

it was only 11 eps? felt like there were more. It is a great show. two hours of it tonight. I think I chose to watch that over JOURNEYMAN (time-wise, not time slot-wise).

just got back from HOW TO LOSE FRIENDS AND ALIENATE PEOPLE. I liked it. nothing special and turns formulaic/cookie-cutter. but it's competent within the genre, and the performances are good. fyi, lest you want to kill me for this recommendation, it's a more masculine version of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. It's not as whiny, sappy...but it is in the same genre/narrative structure.

this looks like a good week of releases. HTLFAAP wasn't as good as I'd hoped, but CHOKE and NICK AND NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST also hit wide release today. and they all look pretty good. (eerily similar in tone/plot/theme though).
