Reading about your medivac experience... man, that's so wrong on so many levels I'm totally shocked. 500$ could prolly buy you a return flight to another country or a months worth of taxi rides downtown and back. If your insurance covered only hospital bills and not treatment in a medivac vehicle that would explain it but, in turn, make it even more senseless. Hope they at least managed to patch you up good in the hospital cuz what you're describing here sure doesn't sound like you only bruised your knee while riding a bike. I also can't help but wonder how much cheaper medical care in the states would be if they cut back on all the red tape and if doctors/hospitals wouldn't get sued for malpractice so often when only trying to help and doing the best that they can. I'd cut on all the BS authorization papers by passing a law that if a person is conscious and lucid and agrees to be treated in a hospital (or his/her next of keen when the patient is incapable of deciding that for himself/herself for whatever reasons) no lawsuit can be forced on the doctors/hospital. Patient would still be able to demand second opinion, but only if the second doctor agrees that would not be in any way harmful for the patient. If the patient requires any treatment that's not within the standard of care or denies one that is (info on what that is should be made publicly available by the surgeon general's office), all the necessary papers should be signed beforehand and all such data should be kept in a social security database or whatever the equivalent in the states. DNR patients/organ doners/... should also be registered beforehand like e.g. diabetes patients. Simple, one paper to sign (for the most ppl) and the magic can start happening. I know I'm simplifying things but there must be a way out of this craziness, right? Then again, in such a perfect world without all the unnecessary bureaucracy, a shit load of statesmen's incompetent nephews & nieces would be unemployed... and thus - such law would never have passed the trial of ignorance anyway. You're prolly wondering why am I so mad angry about all this, right? After all, I don't even live in the states and so on... well, cuz if nothing else US are one of the oldest democracies in the world (not counting ancient Greece and Carantania) and if that's an example others are to follow, the future for all of us doesn't spell daisies, that's for sure. And I really honestly hope at least you're of good health now Dinky so you can kick some fat butt for 500$ tax return.
