Is this the future of Television?

Postby Jynks on Sat Mar 18, 2006 2:44 am

With the advent of the Massive Online Role playing games, such as WoW, EQ2, SWG etc etc a strange thing is happening. People are maddly making and downloading movies made in game by players. These movies are somtimes pretty darn good.

People are spending more and mroe time playing these games, some like PE even have working ecomenies were a gold in game is a $1 US in the real world (bills on and off your credit card so you can in fact LIVE in the game and pay your bills etc etc)

As emotes, voice communication and the like get bigger and better can we expect to see more and more of these "movies" getting made... untill say a powerful guild is in fact a TV station, where viewers follow the lives of famous adventures in the game world?

Try this for a decent example of a "movie" style"
Return - A Warcraft Motion Picture

Try this for an example of a raid movie.

Yeah i noticed the increase over recent years, that said in game movies aren't at all new, you ever saw any of the Quake ranger movies they were some of the first i recall?

Here's some more:

and what with "The Movies" game that allows you to make movies, its getting better and more popular, but they were doing it back a decade ago with quake 1  The professionalism is lousy though.

I'll check out the movies though :)

Speaking of mmo games, i was thinking of making one at somepoint, have to be in my free time, and my opengl skills are hardly l33t (I've only dabbled and my maths sucks ). Only 'mass' multiplayer online game i ever played was graal when it was free.

The future of tv, however, is p2p distribution with embedded sponsorship I believe. Its the only way to release the stuff, get vast amounts of money back, and not effect dvd sales, and it works very well for everyone in the supply chain. TV networks and advertising middle men and distributors are going to get in the way... its exactly like gaming to consumer, we simply don't need publishers that much, shame that the only people to try cut out the middle men with games are complete nazis about it (valve)
