have not seen this series in a long time anybody remember it

Starlost? I remeber it vivdly from my childhood.

It was about a multi-generational colony ship that is out of control except none of the "passengers" are aware they are on a spaceship and all the pilots types are hundreds (or perhaps thousands) of years dead.

If I remember it correctly it was a Canadian production but I'm not sure if it ever got picked up outside Canada.

I haven't seen anything about it since it's inital run in the early 80's
It would be great to see if it was still as good today.

yes Stinky that is indeed the series i am looking for and it was a short live production but it was plaqued with a ton of problems and never really got off the ground sure wish i could see it again though

hmmm you might want to clarify what your after exactly by providing some info... imdb report several tv series, the original from 1973 and then some recycled all through the 80s... tvtome.com is a good place too. just provide a link to clarify. I believe that the 80s ones are just several episodes put together to make tv movies:
1. "Starlost, The" (1973)
2. Starlost: Deception, The (1980) (TV)
3. Starlost: The Alien Oro, The (1980) (TV)
4. Starlost: The Beginning, The (1980) (TV)

and indeed, a search for Starlost: The Deception came out with this one:
