It turned out that the Goa'uld Ra was only one of many alien System Lords who used the Stargates to conquer much of the universe. When Earth uncovers a working cartouche to decipher the coding system of Earth's stargate, they can now travel anywhere. Earth's military sends out SG teams to explore new planets, find technology, and oppose the Goa'uld. Jack O'Neill and Daniel Jackson from the movie are part of SG-1. They are joined by Sam Carter, a scientist, and Teal'c, a Jaffa who is convinced the Goa'uld are not gods. After Daniel Jackson was temporarily killed off in Season 6 (when actor Michael Shanks left the show for a year) they brought in Jonas Quinn, a scientist from another planet, to take Jackson's place.</p></td></tr></table>

'Lost City' sends Stargate in new directions

The SG-1 Season Seven finale "Lost City" is the genesis point for sending the Stargate franchise in many new directions, executive producers Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper told GateWorld. The two originally wrote "Lost City" to be a feature film, which would tie up many SG-1 storylines while setting the stage for the spin-off series, Stargate Atlantis.
"[We wanted to] create a feature film that would act as a bridge between SG-1 and a spin-off series," Cooper said, "and at the same time spawn hopefully a series of SG-1 features. But then Season Six was so successful. And Season Seven built on that so successfully. The ratings were growing so dramatically on Sci-Fi that they decided to order not only Season Eight, but the spin-off to run concurrently. And we thought, 'Wow! What a great oppportunity to basically trade on our own success, and have SG-1 be the lead-in to Atlantis on a big Stargate night on Sci-Fi.'"

But the prospect of having two shows running at the same time forced the producers to modify their original plans for the spin-off, which was to be based on Earth after Stargate SG-1 ended. Now, Atlantis will be set in another galaxy so that the two shows -- and Stargate programs -- don't step on one another's toes.

"We kind of changed gears and said, 'Now that they're going to exist concurrently, the galaxies have to be different, the worlds of the two shows,'" Cooper said.

"What we were going to do is try to reset to zero as much as possible," Wright said, "by defeating the Goa'uld and Anubis in 'Lost City,' and create a vacuum that the new stories could take place in. And, in fact, that was still going to be encumbered by all of the other baggage of our galaxy -- of allies and all the other players."

Their solution was to use the season finale not only to set the stage for Atlantis, but to reset the board for on-going SG-1 adventures as well. Following the defeat of Earth's greatest enemy, Jack O'Neill is promoted to run Stargate Command -- signaling a shift in SG-1's team dynamic.

"SG-1 has evolved as a team," Cooper said. "They don't really do a lot of going out and exploring other planets type work, just because they've become such experts. And they're more like the high-priced consultants that are called in to deal with the extreme situations as they unfold. So we are able to kind of center the stories much more around the team anyways," despite many stories shifting to the S.G.C. following O'Neill's promotion.

"Richard Dean Anderson is really embracing it, too," Cooper said. "He's having a great time."
