I would like to add my collection of SCI-FI to this site. I started experimenting with DVDFab on my Roughnecks: Starship Troopers DVDs. Any advice the "Professionals" can give me on DVDFab settings is most welcome.

Thanks!

avoid dvdfab like the plague; it is a transcoder not a re-encoder!!!! That's all about speed and not about quality. You want a re-encoder.

For rips (Xvid - best for releases):
Gknot

For DVDrs (Personal backups):
DVDRebuilder (+CCE)

DVDFab is not a professional app, its a quick noddy one... personally, avoid!

There's a couple of threads @ SBiG about ripping aswell that you might wanna check out:
For GK:

And another nice prog and way to make rips;
avs2xvid:

Those in combination with the 'uber' doom9 site should be more then enough to get you started :beerchug:

OK, tried ripping one of my Roughneck DVDs. It gave me 5 VOBs and 5 audio files. Is there a way to combine the audio? ALso, does someone here need to check my work?

Thanks for the info and help.

so you've got the vobs on your disc, you need to now use DGIndex to create a d2v file.

That will give you the audio as wav / ac3 / dts, and a file you can now load in gknot that points to the video in the vobs.

Next you then need to choose the correct filesize, resolution, etc. and do an encode. Covered in the above guides :)

thanks spud, got it to work, though I think I went overboard on filesize..I'll keep playing with this. As to my using DVDFAB...what's DVDfab??? :wacky:

what filesize are you going for?

You need to strike a balance between:
filesize
compressibility
length/type of movie

For a crap b-movie i tend to go for 744mb (1/6th DVDr) with mp3 audio and reduce the resolution if needed, for decent films I go for 1490mb (1/3rd DVDr) and try and preserve resolution + AC3 :)
